| A Black Widow bite? I found two outside my house with these egg sack things. No pics as they are completely obliterated and are just a grease stain now. I had no idea these things were as big as they are. damn.... |
|
They are pretty common out here, just watch out where you stick your hand to grab stuff that has been sitting for a long time. They love little nooks and hidden places to take up shop and usually stay out of the open areas. I placed a couple abalone shells outside to dry out and let the sun remove all of the algae. A few months later I picked them up and a couple good sized black widows made their homes inside. |

My Father-in-Law got bitten by one and according to my Mother-in-Law, he got pretty sick.
He also got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick bite, which would have killed him if they hadn't tried a new drug on him. Unfortunately, I don't remember which drug it was. Penicillin? |
| I worked for a pest control outfit for a short time, one of the guys there had been bitten 5 times by black widows over the course of 3 years. He described it as basically like having the flu for a couple days. I've never been bitten myself, but came really close once when I found one taking up residence under the handle of one of my garbage cans. |

Quoted: They're cobweb spiders and they'll set up shop anywhere you generally find cobwebs if they're left alone. I have posted this before, but it bears repeating.
In the good old days when privies were much more common, Black Widows would set up housekeeping under the seats, to dine on a steady diet of flies. During that time, a significant number of Black Widow bites were on the end of the penis. Some poor bastard would sit down to take a nice quiet shit, and Bingo! The spider resented the intrusion of a dangling dick into its 'personal space." Not a happy outcome. NO, goddammit, this is NOT a poop thread! |

Get some bird food and keep your dog inside for a few days.
I have a stone wall and the black widows love them. I toss out bird food every few days and in return they eat all the spiders on the walls and around the yard and keep the garden free of caterpillars. |

I had some kind of "insect" bite a few months ago.It was likely SOME kind of spider.I got to the Doc within a couple days and they got it under control before it became a big deal.
I was allergic to the antibiotic but other than that it was gone in a couple weeks. I doubt it was a Black Widow...........but it was still painful as hell. |

I (being from the "deep north") have never seen one. How big do they get, does a big one have an abdomen the size of a grape? Spiders freak me the fuck out, except for small Salticids. They get big, the abdomen won't be as big as a grape, but can be about half that size. |

They can smoke you. They usually won't bite unless they are screwed with, until they have eggs in the nest. You touch that nest and the spider will come after you ASAP. That must be what happened to my Father-in-Law (in NJ), he said the damned thing ran up his arm and nailed him before he could shake it off. |

like most bug bites, it depends some on the person bitten. some get flu-like symptoms for a few days; a guy I know had a rotting hole bore it's way down to his shinbone, and had all the flesh debreeded before the infection stopped. that was a brown recluse not a black widow. different types of venom. |

They will kill a man if not tended to correctly. We get a ton of them here. If bitten, you'll live if you get to help quickly.
I know a guy that has been bitten by black widows four times. The last time he didn't even go to the ER. But he has a very low reaction to them and it seems to be getting less intense. |

I was bitten on my right forearm while I was asleep when I was 18. I woke up with muscular pain in my right thigh. Went to the hospital a few hours later, by then every muscle in my body was in intense pain and the muscles around my mid section tightened up making it difficult to breath. I was in a lot of pain for the next three days, even with meds.
Horrible little bitches. |
