Been thinking about picking one up. I just finished converting my Xbox Kinect into a pretty handy 3d laser scanner. Not as accurate as commercial models, but with a little extra work, results in CAD models just about as good. I'd like to go the other direction, and the MakerBot Replicator, which is a low cost (2k) dual extruder 3D printer, would be the perfect companion for my prototyping.

Anybody used one or know any pitfalls of it?

I can neither confirm nor deny that would be one of my first tests...though making it from ABS could be a challenge. This one has a 8.9 x 5.7 x 5.9 inches build envelope. I don't recall a lower receiver envelope.

you just send them the file and they make it for you, metal or plastic in 10 days

Yep. And I'm looking for that capability, but in my garage and a whole lot less than 10 days.

8.9 inches might not be long enough. The other dimensions should work, though.

There's nothing shady about it if you worded it that way because of that. Now if you were printing them and selling them that's different. I guess it's like booze. You can brew all the booze you want. If you start selling it, that's different. The .gov wants its cut.

I saw that one, but the Replicators 2.5 micron (Z axis) and 11 micron (XY axes) accuracy lends itself to printing assembled mechanical assemblies, such as RC gearboxes, and such. The one linked wouldn't be capable of that sort of mating surface resolution.

Also, the replicator uses 1.75mm / 1.8mm ABS 1KG plastic spools for about $45 a spool, depending on color. Can one acquire plastic elsewhere for cheaper?
