My ranch is in South Texas. I have never seen this type of ant colony before. We now have four of them on the place.
They seem to kill any plant life in the mound. I am not sure if it is due to the extra soil choking out the water to the roots or if the ants are killing the plant life for some unknown reason to me.
We do have lots of harvester ants which are native to the area. This mound formed over a period of a few months.
Any help from the hive?

I grew up in south Texas, and we had cutter ant beds that looked like that.

Go stomp around in the middle of it a few times and get some pics of the ants so we can see what they look like.
Just make sure you stand real still. If it's fire ants, they go after movement.

They're not fire ants?

Mag dump and take a piss right in the middle of that patch. The response will tell you wether they are piss ants or warriors

The ants were very small and light colored. Stomping on the mound did not cause them to come out. I had to dig about four inches down.
Sorry, but I could not get a good picture of the ants with my phone camera.
