It's also possible for your signal, under ideal conditions, to skip alternatively between the ionosphere and the surface of the Earth and as you unkey the mic, you might hear part of your last syllable coming back at you on the back side of the antenna, having gone around the world.  I've never experienced this, but I know people who have.
