So why park 1/2 to 2/3 block away from an address where you're called to for whatever reason? Is there nothing you may need in the car?
How do you decide to approach drivers side or passenger side on a traffic stop? Seen both... |
|
Alot of it is officer preference, there are pros and cons to tactics in every situation. Alot has to do with training in your area, something your individual training coach taught you, then later what you developed on your own. I used to approach on the driver's side. However, if you have to make a stop on a busy highway, passenger side might be safer.
I was taught to leave my running lights on at night, responding to back up an officer it is easier to see running lights a block or two away, than shinning your light on every house number. Even if the officer parked a few houses down, get up to his car, get out, then walk up to the house. I went to another agency where leaving your running lights on was a forgien concept, they had never heard of such a thing. Whole idea of parking a few houses down is to develop an idea of what you are walking into. Keep you from walking into an ambush. If it is something minor, make your notes on your notepad and do your report later, no sense in taking a bunch of stuff inside with you. If the call is more involved, you have to take your own pictures, give a carbon copy of the report to caller, whatever, walk back to your car and get it. Street Survival talks some about approaching a call. Tactics for Criminal Patrol discusses different types of traffic stops. |
| Why do people feel the need to understand every single little thing police do? How many threads a week are there asking if police can smoke in their cars...or why some dont know anything about guns...or are they allowed to run my tag while im driving...sheesh take a damn criminal justice class or do a ride along if it interests you so much. |

We were walking the dogs and I watched three cops park 2/3 block away and walk all the way up to the house they were headed to. Just seemed odd. Always wondered about the traffic stop thing...I have been approached both ways, and never knew what made them decide to pick a side. That is all.....move on. |

To answer your questions....
1. We never pull right up in front of a house that a call of any sort is occuring at...easy way to be seen early, shot, or whatever. 2. The side of the car is whichever is safest.....say the opposite of traffic flow, no easy cover, etc.... |

If they sent 3 officers to a call, there must have been some sort of disturbance or they were dealing with someone known to fight/resist or mental. Even more reason to not park in front of the house. Of course there are some areas where they dispatch 3 cars so that 2 can handle the call and the 3rd will watch the parked cars so they don't get stolen or broken into. |
|
Quoted: Quoted: If they are parking that far away, its because they believe theres a problem or they don't want to announce their arrival. You can always return for needed items. Which side to approach varies from officer to officer and location of stop. This. That. |

I don't have an issue with talking about the "whys" people have as long as they aren't the usual crowd of suspects looking to snipe our procedures. |

| I have wondered about the which side of the car thing before too. i thought maybe approaching the passenger side afforded a better view of the inside of the car, but most newer cars seem to have darker tint on the passenger windows. I could be wrong, it's happened before. |

In my neck of the woods of Florida cops do everything in three's
see someone pulled over 3 cops go behind a grocery store 3 cop cars side by side talking, go back hour later still talking go to dunkin donuts 3 cops having break, I guess the hour behind the store was not enough. Yep wonder why taxes are so high |

How do you decide to approach drivers side or passenger side on a traffic stop? Seen both... Training varies by department and over time tactics change some times for the better sometimes not so much. Personally I want the car close enough to crawl back to to get more ammo and bigger guns, or at least a radio the will get out, but slipping up to a house with the lights off and stopping down the street allows one to get to the back door to greet the bad guy exiting when the other responding officers drive up in front with red lights and spotlghts and flashlights on. Just blame it all on the good idea ferry and remember that no matter how good your tactics are fate and luck are the deciding factors. |

So, let me get this straight. The high speed tactical ninjas in GD have to ASK why someone does not pull directly in front of a house containing a possible disgruntled person?
Further, GD has to ASK why folks don't like to stand in traffic on the interstate?
Public schooling no doubt. They had it. |

I always cuss out my elected officials for letting the PO-lice talk to each other while on duty. I prefer a strict silence policy. |
