I was listening to NPR and they were talking about the band the Small Faces. 'Face' was slang for a hip dude in swinging 60's London. These guys who played pop music for that crowd were really short, so they called their band The Small Faces. They had a lineup change and brought in Rod Stewart and some other guy who weren't short, the name of the band changed to The Faces.
