If you liked  the old one with Kurt Russell then you will enjoy this one.
ETA: So, as mentioned below it is a prequel.
I didn't want to mention it in OP as there is a moment when the light will come on.

Neither was I.

I hated how it just broke out of the block of ice. Stupid.

The ship was covered in ice. In the original movie, it was a large, open pit.

Presumably the last few scenes melt the ice above the ship leaving what they find in the first movie.

It was pretty good.  Not as good as the original, but few movies are.

It was a fucking prequel.  I know some folks don't have reading comprehension.

Do some not have movie comprehension?

Taken as a prequel, it was outstanding.

I understand that it was a prequel.  I was just saying that the original was enjoyable for me.  This one was not.

I liked the first one when they find the craft and the group starts walking around trying to find the edges of it under the ice. Then when everyone finds an edge they all look at each other and realize they are standing in a huge circle.

Meh.....Different strokes.....I liked it to the point I bought it.

Will it be a modern si-fi horror classic like John Carpenter's The Thing? I don't think so but it has it's place.

For the record I thought the original The Thing from Another World was not much of a much other than all the great period mil-surp stuff.

Swedes, what can you say.

I enjoyed the prequel, especially how it went to such lengths to "set the stage" for the 1980's movie.

Just rented the 1982 version for old time's sake.
Watched it in a theater in Carolina, PR with my dad.

It was OK, especially since I "rented" it free from the library. I guess I liked it better than the Kurt Russel one. The original one is the only one I own, and is still the best IMO.

So its not a remake of the Carpenter version but its a prequel..But they completely stole at least 2 major scenes from the Carpenter version...how does that work?

I loved the original one. I have not had a chance to watch this one yet.

The 1982 movie is my absolute favorite movie ever. That being said, I enjoyed the 2011 prequel very much. I did think they could've done better by focusing more on paranoia and suspense like the older movie. It seemed like in the 2011 movie, they were more focused on monster kills and showing off the effects. Still a great movie and it was awesome seeing everything set up for the 82 movie.

By the way, the 1982 movie was actually a remake of the 1951 "The Thing from Another World", which was based off the book "Who Goes There" by John W Campbell. If you're a fan of the 1982 version, both are great to check out!
