but does it erase all programs or does it hold the basics like in safe mode? Drive Wipe can be accessed in the Tools section of CCleaner and allows you to choose whether to scrub only free space or an entire drive using three levels of strength - Department of Defense-level three-pass option, a National Security Administration-level seven-pass cleaning or a 35-pass Gutmann-level deep scrub.
pick one from column "A" or one from column "B" Choose wisely, grasshopper.

I have an old laptop that's all gummed up. If I wiped the whole drive would it also get rid of whatever (presumably viruses) that are making it slower than an 18 year old Catholic girl? I've not tried it, but I don't even know how it could overwrite the the C: drive. It would be erasing itself (the program). You can erase yourself and still work.
Most viruses can be killed by formatting the drive and reinstalling windows, unless you have a nasty boot sector virus, then you need to take more extreme measures. |

I dated a 18 year old Catholic girl, there wasn't a fucking thing "slow" about her. Pro tip: Don't fuck with your computer unless or until you know what the fuck you're doing. Wiping your "free space" in this day and age is plain silly. Upgrade to Win7 or, if your data is your concern, use truecrypt and do whole disk encryption. |

When you delete a file, Windows removes the reference to that file, but doesn't delete the actual data that made up the file on your hard drive. Over time, this data will be overwritten as Windows writes new files to that area of the drive. This means that, given the right software, someone could reconstruct all, or parts of files that you've deleted. For privacy and security reasons, you can set CCleaner to wipe the free areas of your hard disk so that deleted files can never be recovered. More information at the link. |
| Do I need to do something like this before selling a computer? I am thinking of selling my wife's laptop, which she used for all of our financial info, and I am slightly worried that someone could dig around and find some of that deleted info. Is this a non-issue? |
