http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9224670/IBM_touts_quantum_computing_breakthrough

While the article may not be overflowing with excitement, this is a really big deal. QC within 10-15 years means the world will change faster and more drastically than any of us can conceive.

Let's get down to the real meat of the question.  When will 3d CGI porn become easier to produce than that made with real people?

That article gives a very good explanation of how QC works and the architecture they are working on.

I haven't been able to wrap my head around it before, but suddenly it makes sense and it truly isn't all that complicated as far as basics of how it works.

Computing power of the Terminators will be frightening!

Holodecks are overrated and impractical. A neural "uplinks" are the way to go.

That shit will put your dead terrorist daughter inside a cylon prototype.  Fuck that!  I'd rather the safety protocol subroutine get corrupted on the holodeck than risk a cylon daughter!

I would take a cylon wife if she looks like 7 though.

At first, QC probably won't lend itself much to stuff like 3D but inevitably that will change - and very fast, once it is first implemented.

But instead, ponder this:

A super high-res MRI scan of the brain will one day allow neural patterns (your thoughts, memories, and personality) to non-invasively download a copy of "you" into a computer. The copies will either be self-aware or sufficiently convincing that you can't tell the difference. How long before celebrities start selling digital copies of themselves? What sort of abuse would the digi-people be subjected to? What sort of laws and/or black market will spring up around them? How long before they organize and revolt? What happens when replicating someone's digital personality - or your own - is as simple as a cut and paste?

How much for my digi-slave PirateBay copy of Miley Cyrus?

Believe it or not, these are very real questions that will have to be answered some day.

Sounds like we have begun to reverse-engineer some more of that UFO crash space technology.

Honestly though, I thought the part about the cracking of encrypted info to be really interesting. Once we reach that point, I am curious about what a good encryption benchmark would be?

From what I've read in the past, QC will likely open up a new form of encryption just like it will make many prime-number-based encryption algorithms obsolete.  I can't remember the details, and it's all theoretical at this point anyway.

Yep. Quantum Entanglement will replace prime-number encryption. As far as anyone knows, there is no possible way to intercept a QE-encrypted message without destroying the message/code. It is encryption perfected.

There are a ton of considerations that will have to be addressed very quickly as this technology becomes a reality.  I can imaging there will be strict export restrictions on quantum computing hardware.  These devices will be able to reverse engineer common prime-based encryption technologies with ease.  This means virtually every networked device on the planet could be vulnerable.

I think they said it was a sapphire based chip? I don't know if that is the answer to your question. I know they have been wanting to do diamond based microprocessors for years, but in the same way silicon is used. The nice thing about diamond CPUs is that they would be much more resistant to heat so they could potentially have more juice pumped through them (and thus run at higher frequencies I'm assuming) that would kill silicon at this time.

I think your pronunciation would be correct.

It's only confusing if you're specing a self-aware quantum computer to run your space-ark, but that's probably a bad idea anyway.

Wait, wut? I have the slowest connection available through my cable company and I watch Netflix in 720p with no skipping or halting or any problems through my PS3 or laptop. Nothing special about the laptop, either. You likely have some serious hardware problems or you've got a bazillion useless tasks running on your PC.
