Came across this post regarding one of my favorite magazines, Small Arms Review.
Jeff Zimba announced today on Subguns.com NFA Discussion Board that SAR is now owned by Chipolte Publishing and is going from a monthly to a quarterly magazine with an online archive of old articles.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––- LOTS of New Publishing Projects! - Please Read AUTHOR: Jeff Z DATE: 2/2/12 15:24 Hey all, We have a ton of exciting new publishing projects going on! Some are new projects and others are modifications to existing projects. I wanted to announce these additions and changes at a few of my favorite websites so you would have all the facts before the "What's This?" rumor mill started up. :-) First, Small Arms Review is now quarterly magazine with a weekly on-line E-zine and massive archive. Please read the FAQ below. On-line it’s called smallarmsoftheworld.com and yes, it’s a pay site, only $19.95 per year- you can see the archives and new additions… If you are a current Small Arms Review subscriber, read the FAQ below. You didn't lose anything and most seem to think its a big gain actually, and I hope you like it as much as I do. For a decade it has been the direction of Small Arms Review to have a serious on-line presence and I was the last "hold-out". Some say I don't mind change, I just don't like things being different. ;-) It was time to finally listen to the multitude of people asking us to do this and we did it in a BIG way. To coincide with this, I’ve got my own YouTube Channel now! It will be a full-blown video T&E site with many videos running as a complement to the published articles. If a photo is worth a thousand words, a video must be priceless so I decided to give it a try and jumped in, feet first, just last Saturday. It’s just starting up, but you can find it by doing a Youtube Channel Search for "Bigshooterist". I hope you have fun with it and find it helpful and entertaining. Small Arms Defense Journal, the quarterly military/industry magazine that is in 75 countries around the world, has all of its articles in a free site on-line now at www.sadefensejournal.com Just because some people like to be informed while others REALLY like spreading rumors, please read the FAQ below to answer all your questions. Wow, almost 15 years in professional publishing and it feels like something new and exciting is happening again, just like when we went to press with the very first issue of Small Arms Review magazine. It is not my intention to start a big thread because I won't have much time to spend answering questions and don't have the time to monitor all the sites I like often enough. It was just to get some solid information out to my brothers in arms, the people I like and have been part of my electronic family for so long. I'll try to check back when I can and be of any assistance when I can. Jeff W. Zimba ––––––––––––––––––––––––––- Smallarmsoftheworld.com and Small Arms Review FAQ Small Arms Review magazine is under new ownership- Chipotle Publishing LLC is the new owner. Dan and Debbie Shea are still in charge, Jeff Zimba is doing the layout, Robert Segel is the Senior Editor putting his touch on the content, and the writers, with some new additions, are the same. The magazine is going from a monthly magazine with very limited on-line presence, to a much larger quarterly magazine with a massive online archive and 52 weeks a year there is a new edition of smallarmsoftheworld.com online for the subscribers. If you are a paid subscriber, you'll be getting the same amount of time as you had left on your paid subscription even though what you'll be getting has higher value. Did I lose my subscription? No, it's just changed a bit, you're going to receive quarterly 148 +/- page issues, and then online weekly articles, news and archive updates to the tune of 52 issues per year, for the term of your prepaid subscription. You're still subscribing to Small Arms Review magazine and getting the bonus online magazine and archives. I didn't get a renewal statement, what do I do? We haven't sent out renewal statements for a while, in order to see exactly how the new program would be implemented. If your subscription has run out, simply go to www.smallarmsoftheworld.com and click "Purchase a Subscription" at the bottom of the page. You can subscribe to just the quarterly Small Arms Review for $39.95 per year, just the online smallarmsoftheworld.com for $19.95 per year which includes your online SAR issue, or both for a discounted rate of only $49.95 per year. If your interests are more military/industry, you can also add in Small Arms Defense Journal for $49.95 per year if you want, and of course there is a discounted rate for all three. Will this new online magazine look exactly like my old SAR? No, it's an online magazine and we chose a format that allows you to see articles as readable text with the photos in a folder to the side. The captions are with the photo so when you click on a thumbnail of a photo, you get the caption as well. It doesn't make sense to use the exact same format for online. Every time the issue goes online, the new articles appear at the top. After they "Time out" they go into the archives so you have them as searchable resource forever. The weekly edition updates go online in the same manner. I've been wanting to subscribe for years, but the "Foreign" subscriber rate is too high. Does this help me? Absolutely! Now, you can subscribe online from anywhere in the world for only USD $19.95, and receive the full magazine online plus access to all the archives. Since we don't have the printing and shipping costs, you can pay the same price as anyone on the Internet. You can also subscribe for the physical Small Arms Review magazine if you like, and for Small Arms Defense Journal as well, but that costs more for overseas as you know. We realize there are many out there (us included) that like the tactile feel of the physical magazine, so we still produce the magazine. Is this legal to do, switching my subscription around? Your subscription hasn't been switched around, you still subscribe to Small Arms Review magazine, it's just larger and less frequent for the paper edition, and much more frequent for the online edition and archives. Businesses have to do this type of thing if they have to adjust for economy or changing demographics, and if a new owner of a magazine decides to make changes like this, as long as they fulfill the prepaid subscriber liabilities, they can legally do so. This is all standard operating procedure for the publishing business, it is well established and legal, as well as a proper way to take care of the subscribers. They do not need to offer any refunds, but we are doing so for anyone who isn't comfortable with the new format. What are the archives you're talking about? This is Dan Shea talking- many of the authors of articles in the past have chosen to preserve these articles in the online format for the first time. These are combined with my personal archives from 35 years of research, as well as the libraries of photos, manuals and research documents that I have inherited from friends and mentors of mine like Dolf Goldsmith, George Chinn, Daniel Musgrave, Tom Nelson, Herbie Woodend, and many others. We have Colonel Jarrett's research and photography from the 1920s through the 1950s and a lot of Joseph Smith's as well. Our goal over the next ten years is to have these many hundreds of thousands of photos, research documents, rare manuals, etc, all made into PDFs or JPEGs we can put online in searchable form. All properly vetted out so that these live forever and are correct to our knowledge today, not "Wikifacts." There are many other individuals who are contributing as much as they can, and a number of well known authors and researchers who are planning to put all their work on this site, to preserve for posterity. It will always be a work in progress, and it is today. Can I preserve my research, photos, etc on the site? In the end, the Internet appears to have won out as the repository of knowledge for most, and our goal is to get everything we can put online on this site so the next generations can access the real data. We might be able to help you with this, just email us and let us know what you have in mind. Will you still be printing books? Yes, and we have a lot of great ones coming up. We'll let you know as we go. All of us like the tactile feel of books and magazines, but we're all working towards the new methods like Kindle, Ipad etc. Can I copy articles, manuals, documents and photos and use them for myself? Everything on the site is copyrighted, some solely to Chipotle Publishing LLC, some to the author only, some to a combination of the two. Some is actually like freeware, but we did the work to prepare it online so there is a claim to our part of the work. You can't simply reprint these items in commerce or use them in publishing. There are, however, certain known guidelines for quoting articles and documents, stick to that and you're fine- these require giving credit to where the item came from, please credit the author/photographer and link to www.smallarmsoftheworld.com and we'll be happy. If you want to use Hi-Res pics (The site has lo-res) or reprint articles in full, please ask. If you want to use them commercially, most of the writers and photographers are open to royalty arrangements of reasonable amount. We have a program we'll be setting in place to make this automatic next year. As far as using them for yourself, in your own library or your own personal website, we're good with that. Rule of thumb is if it's public, just credit us as above. If it's private, that's what your subscription is about- it's your resource! If you're selling it, please make proper arrangements regarding respect to the intellectual property of the authors/photographers. What about my advertising? If you're an advertiser, you don't lose any of our traditional coverage, you gain hundreds of thousands more in views with hotlinks on the site. It's best for you to talk with our advertising people on this and get your personal questions answered, but if you advertise in either of our print magazines, you automatically get a free banner ad on the site (for the first 3 months, through April 17, 2012)! Companies can also contract for hotlink banner ads on a quarterly basis, if they're not in print. Since we don't make known advertisers prepay, no one is out anything, just getting better exposure! Can I write articles for SAR or the website? You are certainly invited to submit articles to us. Go to the section of the website about "Writing Articles" (click here to go there now) and follow the instructions to get writer's guidelines. If you're an accomplished writer on technical subjects it helps, and if not, there's no reason you can't give it a try. We suggest smaller articles-one pagers- for new writers. Pick a small aspect of a larger subject, get good quality photography done on the subject, and write in the third person- not "I this, I that", write about the subject. Remember, all data should be vetted out, everything fact checked, and peer reviewed. Communicate with us first, and we'll try and help you get started. Oh, and the quality of the photos can kill an article very quickly- they need to be as good as possible. Are you trying to compete with the existing free websites or the Auction and sales sites? Good Lord, no! There are plenty of people doing that huge amount of work- Subguns.com, Sturmgewehr.com, AR15.com, 1919.com, Uzitalk.com, gunbroker.com, auctionarms, gunsamerica, and many others, all of these people work hard and have some fun, and do a great job. We're not having discussion forums or "For sale" pages. Smallarmsoftheworld.com is simply a resource for the small arms community. We charge for what we do, because it costs a lot of money to provide this living, growing resource. We might choose to sell some items in our e-store at times, but generally, the goal is about the archives, news, and articles. There may be a point where we open some small discussions online, but have no current plans to do so. We're happy to be supportive of all the other sites, as we always have been. What if I want the balance of my subscription refunded? When you get your letter that gives you your unique, temporary password to get on the site, take a few minutes to explore www.smallarmsoftheworld.com and see if it interests you. If you want to keep it and grow with us as our resources are transferred online, plug in a new password and thanks for staying! If not, go to the "My Account" page (you must be logged into the site). There is a link on the right side of the page that says "Revoke Subscription/Unsubscribe"- click on that and follow the directions. You can only request a refund online if you sign in with the unique password we give you, this is to prevent fraud. If you can't do this online, you can send a letter to "Small Arms Review, 631 N. Stephanie St #562, Henderson, NV 89014" with your subscriber info, and request a refund on the balance of the subscription you had. If you paid with a credit card, we have to refund to the credit card you used, so in either that letter, or in the online form, you will need to provide the last four digits of that card as proof and to ensure the credit is correct. If you used a check, you'll receive a check back. Refunds will be processed within 30 days of when we receive the request. No hard feelings, we understand, and please come back when you get more comfortable with the whole idea of www.smallarmsoftheworld.com. Will there be a special section devoted to ratting out manufacturers to the BATFE? ![]() You beat me to it. Will Dan Shea still be involved with the pub, if so I wouldn't piss on it if it was on fire. It looks like Dan Shea and his wife are the owners according to what was posted. Chipotle Publishing LLC is the new owner. Dan and Debbie Shea are still in charge

Well, no, not actually, because a little bird tells me that there was a lot of gossip and grumbling behind the scenes about NFATCA President John Brown's recent outing as an ATF snitch and just exactly how he is getting sweetheart (i.e., teflon) status in the soon-to-implode case of U.S. vs. Clark. Inquiring minds, it seems, want to know. The background noise of grumbling among NFATCA members is growing. The commoners don't like the "special status" of the Lairds and are wondering how much Brown and his former compadre Dan Shea (a source tells Sipsey Street that the former friends have had a falling out) told the ATF bigwigs like Rick Vasquez about THEM. (See here and here for previous Sipsey Street revelations about Mr. Shea.)
Just how long is the NFATCA going to tolerate a federal confidential informant as their "leader"? Inquiring minds want to know. |
