Just saw this on bluray. I hadn't seen it in probably over a decade, and my only solid memory of anything Earp-related was that this and Kevin Costner's movie existed, and that Doc Holiday was a character in TNT's great little movie Purgatory.
This one isn't the best directed or written movie ever, but it's fun. Two things that stand out after seeing this and comparing it to the Wikipedia entry on the gunfight: 1. The Earps were Republicans and their opponents, including the corrupt local sheriff, were Democrats. That's established fact. 2. The movie takes a little dramatic license, but not much. In fact, a few scenes actually tone down the actual history, although the genocidal campaign of destruction toward the end was a little excessive. I suppose my memory was vaguely of a few cops shooting a few armed drunks once upon a time, in one of those events that starts and is over in about the same hour. Not really a big thing that history should care about. Maybe it's the difference between someone who finds themself in danger and reacts, and someone who willingly enters a dangerous situation, knowing full well what's likely to happen. Anyway, it's an interesting story. If only Osama and Saddam had watched this movie before pissing off Bush. Never piss off a Republican, no matter how calm they look. |

1. The Earps were Republicans and their opponents, including the corrupt local sheriff, were Democrats. That's established fact. Source? I'm not saying I disagree with you. Wikipedia goes into it at length with a lot of credible sources (as credible as anything about that time period can get), but here's an example: http://www.wyattearpfaqs.com/index.php?action=artikel&cat=1&id=40&artlang=en Remember that the Earps and Holiday weren't yokels. They had business ambitions, financial sensibilities, and were known for their many investments and campaigns for public office. Holiday of course was an educated and licensed dentist. These were not barflies for whom life was just a series of random events beyond their control. I think that's what makes the story so astounding. That a tiny group of people like that could stand up against a very large group of criminals, alone, and come out on top. Not just in the well-known gunfight but in the vendetta that followed it. Very similar to how The Untouchables played out dozens of years after. And once again, a small group of educated yankees working against a large group of criminals and corrupt public officials. |

Alright, good to know. |

Get three buddies to watch the movie with you. Write each Earps' name and Doc's name on individual pieces of paper. Put the names in the hat and everyone draws one. Take a shot every time your character has a drink. Take "Doc" to the hospital to have his stomach pumped. |

Any attempt to draw conclusions about Republicans/Democrats of the 19th century and the parties as they exist today wont work..........a lot of Arfcommers would be shocked to see where their core values line up..... |

"I beg to differ, sir. We started a game we never got to finish. *cough* Play for blood, 'member?" "I was just foolin' about." "I wasn't." "I'm afraid the strain was just to much for him to bear." One of my favorite scenes. |

You're never supposed to mention Tombstone and the other movie (that shall not be named that has a guy in it with the initials KC) in the same sentence. Run, you cur!
Tombstone is one of the best westerns of our time, and you'd hate watching it with me, or my college roomates. We know the lines by heart. |

In college I knew the Latin lines in the beginning. May have to watch it this afternoon........... |

"Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know! Let's have a spelling contest!" Funny shit, right there! That is one of my favorite movie exchanges ever! I was going to post that! Instead I offer... "Alright, nobody move!" "Nonsense! By all means, move!" |
