holy shit!  I only got one side done and the bottom is killing me.  I don't want to drink anything much less eat soup, jello, anything.  This literature they give you after the operation seems a little optimistic.  Anybody got anything?

I can't help much since mine were pulled in the 9th grade, but you'll eat and drink soon enough. I'm in the process of self medicating for an absess tooth.

Just had it done, wasn't that bad.

Anything was relief to that rotten ass bastard tooth that was in there.  I think I was pain free a week after they were pulled.

I had them take em all out at once, because I sure as hell wasn't going back.

Oh yea, the hyrdocodone just knocked my ass out for 14 hours at a time, so I stuck with the 600mg ibuprofens.

I had 6 wisdom teeth removed (4 at once then 2 more about 10 years later) with very little issues.

My friend had bone splinters coming through her gums from her jaw after they took her wisdom teeth out (different DDS).

had mine out in grade 11. Slept the entire first day only waking up to pop t3's, next day I was up and doing alright at home, watching movies and buggering around on the computer. Day after that I ripped a bunch of stitches out trying to eat fries at wendy's.

By far the worst part is your breath/ taste in your mouth for the next little while. Getting the syringe to shoot mouthwash in the holes during your routine checkup is a godsend

Be careful with that

Salt water warm rinses.  Advil typically works better then Vicodin or Percoset.  Save that stuff for a better day
It really shouldn't hurt THAT much, mostly from soreness which the salt water helps and inflammation which Advil reduces. Take 800mg of Advil(4 pills), if you've never had issues with it.

Vicodin just gets you stoned.   Typically when I have anything major done, I take the first one or two Vicodin to mostly knock me out then Advil after that.
You can get a healing mouth rinse rather then alcohol/mouthwash,  orajel makes a hydrogen peroxide rinse that helps it heal faster.

Pain should mostly switch to predominantly soreness-only by tomorrow.  If you are having major pain issues, call the dentist.

That's only a matter of time.  You have to decide now if you're going to bite the bullet and get a root canal/crown or loose the tooth completely later.  At least go to the dentist and get an antibiotic prescription, they'll make you get that before you get any work done anyway.   You may be able to temper it/drain it temporarily, but it will be back with a vengeance if you don't get something done.  You may even loose adjacent teeth if you let it go too long, or even worse, parts of your jaw.

Most's dentists will negotiate pricing a bit and offer payment plans.

But eating pudding and macaroni for a month? Now THAT was a bunch of horseshit

I think it depends on the particulars of your situation as to how bad it will be. I had mine out when I was in my mid-twenties. All four of mine were impacted and infected. My face and jaw were so swollen I thought my mom was going to faint when she saw me. I only stopped by to ask her to drive me to the surgeon...

I was very unhappy for a few days after the surgery, but it got better pretty quick after that.

It gets much better after the third day.  I found that prescription strength ibuprofen was by far the most effective painkiller.

I had three removed.  The fourth was buried very deep and near a nerve.  Doc said that I would almost certainly have a numb spot on my face if he removed it and, since it wasn't bothering me like one of the other ones was, he didn't think removing it was wise.  However, I got the other three done because I was determined to not go through it again.

ETA: the instructions the surgeon sent home with you....FOLLOW THEM.  If you get a dry socket, you will wish you had.

Had 4 of them a few days before my first day of college

They had to drill one side deeper than the other so it still hurt for about 3 weeks. I was not a happy person. Just keep on the prescriptions the doctor gave.

I am having a molar extracted next Thursday.  I've been reading up on some things, and glad you made this post.

How does spitting increase the chance of dry socket?  It's not like sucking on a straw or cigarette.  I don't see any pressure involved with a simple spit.

I had all 4 pulled at the same time when I was 24. The blender became my best friend, hell I didn't eat solid food for almost 2 weeks.

Because you're upping the pressure in your mouth that could dislodge the coagulated 'plug' in the socket.  If there were no pressure it would be dribbling.

Drugs.

I've got all of mine except one. I broke it in a few pieces.  Took me a few days to find someone to pull it.  No problems after it was gone.  Wasn't that bad.

Eat your percocets and DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT DRINK OUT OF A STRAW.  Unless you want a case of dry socket.  I got all four of mine pulled at the same time.  The dentist was a dentist for like 50 years and had served 27 years of that in the Navy.  He was a pro to say the least.  I didn't feel a damn thing.  I wasn't hardly even sore after.

Six?  That's a bit unusual I think.  Glad it wasn't a problem but I would like to hear more.

I had all four removed at the same time.  I mostly remember being amused at the sight of the dentist reaching in with dental vise grips and the resulting crunching
sounds.

Edit: the sight of him with a hammer and chisel, approaching my mouth,  was also humorous.

Yes, nitrous oxide does wonders for your outlook in extreme circumstances.

No problems here ....... Had 2 pulled & 1 I had to go to a oral surgeon to have 1 removed.
Problem with the last 1 was it was laying sideways under the gum.  He had to put me
out for that one.

Had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled out in college with really bad swelling.  Just had a molar extracted yesterday and doing surprisingly well.  Put an ice pack on the area 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off all day and so far no signs of swelling this time around.  Like others have said, stick to the post op instructions and you will be fine.

Had my two top wisdom teeth pulled last Thursday.  They shot me up with a local, let me sit for about half an hour and then the dentist came in and about ten minutes later I was walking out the door.  He gave me a prescription for vicodin, took about 10 of them over a three day period.  The right side feels fine but my left one has a little bit of soreness left.

The Navy pulled all four of my wisdom teeth at once.

Took 1800mg of Motrin about two hours before, then got a facefull of novacain.

Doc went in there and yanked all four out, the last one he had to break into three pieces.

They sent me back to work that same day.

The civilian I worked with took one look at me drooling blood from my face and sent me home for two days.

The worst part about it was one of the back sockets didn't heal up right away, so I had a small hole in there.

Peanuts from crunchy peanutbutter were a motherfucker, always getting stuck in there.

It took 6 months before it healed.

I think one dentist I went to years ago must have learned the trade in a mortuary.....or maybe prison. He literally beat mine into pieces and pulled the big chunks.I had pieces coming out of my gums for a month. When I got home my Mother nearly fainted I had so much blood on my shirt.I was barely 18 at the time
More recently I had a dentist who had been  in the National Guard for 20 + years and he was really good.

I had a root canal last November.  It was uneventful.  I didn't have any pain what so ever afterwards.  They gave me some advil at the office and thats it.  I didn't take any additional medication after that.  It was like heaven being able to drink cold liquid again without the sharp pain.

You need stronger drugs to kill the pain, or take what you have a little more often. I agree the sockets take a while to heal the worst thing I found when I had mine out was rice, it's suck in there and is very hard to get out, I avoid rice for about 3 months.
