Today the second attempt at removing my 22mm kidney stone failed.  Doc is working on Plan C.

Funny thing is that today we have all these high tech, less invasive methods, but they have their limitations.  Today's was shockwave lithotripsy, which is used to pulverize the stone.  This rock is so hard the treatment had no noticeable effect.

Last week's procedure was to use an instrument like a straw with a tip that vibrates at 50,000 Hz and has a vacuum up the center.  It breaks up the stone and sucks out the bits continuously.  The problem is that this instrument is not flexible and requires a straight line to the stone.  Due to the stone being near the top of my kidney, a rib was in the way and he couldn't get the proper angle on it.

Life is a little more interesting than I'd like.

I asked about the old school, low tech method where they make a big incision, take hold of the kidney, slice it open, remove the stone, and stitch everything back together.  He said that procedure is not used anymore.  I thought that was kind of funny, because if we did it that way I'd be a week into my recovery now.

Or you'd be dead.

They're balancing convenience with safety.  Hang in there and drink more fluids in the future, heh.

I wondered how you fared with your stone yesterday.  I measured something at work and it was 22mm- that is what jogged the memory.

Best wishes on removal of the stone and your recovery.

Thanks.

The biggest nuisance is that I've had a tube coming out my back for over a week now.  One end goes to the right kidney & bladder, and the other to a bag.  Of course, the bag needs draining rather frequently.  No pain, but it's a nuisance.

Since this new appendage has been with me for a while, I decided to give it a name.  The bag is Sean.

Isn't that P. Diddy's real name?  Seemed appropriate.

I hate pushing the herbal medicine pathway, but some people have good results with these.   My partner (EMS, not homo) had kidney stones and this helped prevent him from getting new ones.  Some people say it helps dissolve an already formed stone.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllanthus_niruri

22mm is a big ass stone.  At least with the nephrostomy tube you'll be good till they figure out how to get the stone out.

I missed your name the first time around!

Often a procedure is replaced and the old procedure is no longer used or taught so there is no one that actually knows how to do it and you don't want to be the guy that they are learing on!
I hope you get better, good luck.

Back in the late 60s that's how my Dad's stones were removed.  Not high tech, but it worked.

Maybe someone here could tell you how to get it out yourself.  I come here for all of my medical, relationship, and financial advice.
