I just jacked up and deleted the wrong folder from my work laptop; 2 years worth of safety videos, pictures and a few documents. The folder was so large that it skipped over the recycle bin. Am I screwed or can I get this stuff back some how?
If it matters I had them all stored on a portable drive.

Windows does not actually erase the data, but it marks it in the directory.  But anything that you do on the computer is likely to over write the data.  Best bet is to take the whole hard drive into a data recovery service.

Restore from your backup copy.


You DO have a backup copy, don't you?   If not, you just learned a hard lesson.

I have no backup of my portables, time to start.

I may have figured it out. Diskinternals Uneraser seems to have decent reviews and I managed to grab a copy. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Nonsense.  As long as you haven't overwritten the data, it's usually recoverable, although it may be a pain in the ass depending on the filesystem type.

What filesystem?  If it's NTFS, and if you can use a Linux LiveCD, look for one with the "ntfsprogs" package on it.

One problem is, it doesn't recover the hierarchy or the filenames, so you have to go through every file to figure out what it was and where it should go.
