Yea, I know the drill. Screw PayPal.

But this is not a question about using it for a firearms purchase. I've got a high end camera a guy in England wants real bad. He has a friend that is living in Colorado and traveling back to the UK on Friday of next week. He wanted me to ship the camera to Colorado friend so he can bring it on his flight (and bypass customs with their F'ed up VAT they have to pay on imported items)

Guy in England wants to PayPal me $1300 and I flat out refused since I have no recourse if he tries some funny shit and makes a claim against my item. So his buddy in Colorado was going to go to USPS and get me two MO's and mail them to me. (He too is from the UK) But discovered they will not accept a CC for MO's.

Other than pulling the plug on the deal, if he uses the PP Gift option and pays the fees on his end (he's using a CC too, so there will be fees), does this protect me?  I'm sure PP will hold my money for 5 to 10 days, but I just want to make sure he cannot scam me and pull his funds back out.

BTW, he has been a member on the forum I advertised my camera on (POTN) since 2007, and has a few sale items under his belt with positive feedback.

Hives thoughts??

I'd take the gift payment and send to Colorado.

I know it seems risky, but it actually does sound legit to me, no sarcasm this rare time.

By the way, that's the only thing that makes me think he's not someone using a hacked account.

Scammers don't tend to hang around that long.

I figured I was pretty safe using the Gift option.

I had a guy in Poland wire me money for a radio adapter via Western Union but that was only $15.

Does he have good references? How much positive feedback does he have.
If it was just some guy overseas that wants to buy the gun then I wouldn't do it.
If it was a member of a forum where people have interactions all the time then I'd consider it.
In the end just do whatever you are comfortable with.

Have the guy in CO mail you several Visa gift cards or look into a greendot card.

Have the England dude PayPal the funds to friend in CO, who cashes out and gets USPS money orders to mail to you. I have 2000 transactions on EBAY and wouldn't touch this any other way.

Oh well, I just went to the PayPal website and read that they are now putting a 10 to 30 day hold on all funds that started Jan 1.   I'm not letting those bastards keep my money that long!
Now I have to e-mail the guy and tell him the deal is off.

This was my first thought, but read my post above. PayPal is now holding ALL funds for 10-30 days. And since the PP is coming from the UK, you can bet your ass PP is going to hold for the full 30 days.

I for one am glad that MANY US citizens trusted me, and took my PAYPAL or credit card payements to pay for stuff here.

I know its not always easy to trust foreigners.

10-30days is scandalous !

are they paying us interests for holding our money that long ?

I've heard of someone on here recently who got screwed by buyer/paypal because he sent an item to an address other than the confirmed one.  That wasn't through the gift option though, and I'm not sure how PP would like you receiving a  $1300 gift.  Make sure you get the gift payment cleared first before letting go of the camera because if PP keeps the money and you send the camera, I'm going to have to call dibs on the weapons not used in the shooting.

It depends upon how long the account has been open, number of transactions, number of problems, etc. My oldest PP account has never had funds held. My newer account had the funds held for a couple of months upon opening, but soon thereafter, the holds stopped.

I'm sending an email to both parties and telling them the only option I see is for the guy in Colorado to take his CC into a bank and get a cash advance and them drive over to the post office.

No, you are not.

He can later dispute the charge with his credit card company, they will suck the money back from Paypal, Paypal will suck it back from you.

And since you accepted it as a "gift" you can't complain to Paypal that you got ripped off for merchandise.

In short, they can rip you off as easy as a call to their credit card company, and you will have zero recourse.

Its not that most of don't trust foreigners...Its that we don't trust PAYPAL.

I would look at something like USPS money order or bank check from a known bank.  When it clears, then you ship,.  Paypal won't help you, they can dispute at anytime.

here is another option

he can go to a bank and use his Credit Card to get money or even an ATM if he has a PIN after he get's the money he can go to the post office and mail you the money orders he got from the Post Office. This works this is how you can get cash in any country.

good luck
