Dang, do you raise unicorns or something.

I think it is amazing, and have no idea how it works.  Have you seen the super thin Sony screens.  All this stuff is amazing to me

Think of the applications with just windows––and I'm not talking the OS here.

Test equipment.  Rifle scope lenses.  Eyeglasses/work gogles.  Pilot helmets.  Aircraft canopies!

Mirrors!  Bathroom mirrors that can give you the news (or porn) while you shave (or whatever)!

The possibilities are pretty damn cool!

I would LOVE to have an integrated version of this in the rear view mirror of my vehicle, and the windshield.  Integrated windshield/HUD?  Sign me up!  Rear window messaging that can change at the drop of the hat, as opposed to just a sticker figure of Calvin pissing on a Chevy bowtie!

Touch screens with information on the glass at your local aquarium and zoo...vital monitors on the canopies over newborn creches...

Awesome potential here!

Hell...just the combat possibilites are kick ass!

I thought that projectors used LCD's?

But I'm still wrong - a rolling OLED screen could be stored like a projector screen.

Gaming applications, engineering, construction, medical, aviation/aerospace...

Yep. I see huge applications for this type of screen. Not so much on a laptop, but for a digital overlay for the analog world.

Imagine working on a building site. Local GPS sensors relaying precision data to excavators showing you exactly where to move and do. Heads up. In real time.

Imagine doing laparoscopic surgery where you don't have to look through a tiny scope, you just put on a pair of sunglasses hooked up to the remote camera. Complete with real time 3D images superimposed on what you are seeing.

Imagine playing CoD5. Heads up, in real environments, with all the dangerous/violent action being sent to your heads up display providing again the digital overlay to the real world.

The "what's the pointers" and "Oh how much did that cost" are literally an anchor on society. Status quo is a bad thing.

In other news, I love technology, yet I still work out 7 days a week and eat very healthy. The WALL-E picture is a scary thing to think about but doesn't have to be that.

I think the opportunities for technologies like this are endless...but I do have some serious questions about applications:

- What does it look like from the back?  Does the image only show through on the front (one way mirror type of effect)?  This would have ramifications as noted above allowing everyone else to see what you're working on, eliminating any sort of privacy.  If you use this in combat situations, do you want your enemy to be able to see the same thing you are on your LandWarrior display?

- Resolution.  They talked about contrast ratio, but one of the posters above mentioned greys and blacks.  How is the overall performance on the color spectrum?

It will be really cool when they come up with a way to make an adjustable size touchscreen, IMO.  If you could expand your phone screen to something useful when you wish, smartphones would be so much more interesting.

But if they create them to be able to have black colors, then you're screen isn't transparent anymore.  You're either going to have to have black or transparent, you pick.  Or you're going to have to change a lot of source code and hardware to allow for transparencies by creating a specific color that the computer knows is transparent.

I'm pretty sure having a clear monitor is just a cool gimmick, and serves no real purpose.  People like their privacy.  There may be a few applications where it would be helpful, such as at a desk where the person on the other side would need to see what's on the screen, but it would be backwards.  Sure you could flip a switch to reverse it, but it's just as easy to swivel a monitor around.

They'll sell an optional "contrast enhancer" for a bunch of money.  It will consist of a sheet of black cardboard, with Velcro provisions so you can affix it to the back of your monitor.

I think you're all missing the point.
They put it on the laptop to demonstrate the technology.  They are not marketing a laptop with a transparent screen.
