What company are you using, how long have you been using them, and how is the coverage??

My contract is up, and I am thinking hard about a no contract phone.  Some of them offer unlimited data, minutes, and texting for $50/month.

Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Thanks

Fury.

PagePlus - reseller of Verizon's service/network

$29/mo for 1200mins/3000texts/100mb data
$39/mo for unlimited mins/unlimited text/20mb data

Can use almost any Verizon phone on the market

Been with them over 2 years now and love it.  I get the same coverage/network as people who pay $70/mo+ except the only difference is I don't get the latest and greatest phones for cheap through contract.

Only downside is they have apparently really shitty Customer Service but you really don't need to call them unless your shit is majorly fucked up.  If you go through KittyWireless, they take care of 99.4% of any problem(s) you'll ever have plus they're an awesome family.

I've had an AT&T Go Phone since 2007.  $9.99 phone, I throw $100 on it whenever the balance gets low.  Maybe twice a year.
Never had a problem with coverage in any metro zone or suburb.  I've driven from CA to WA then to CO and AZ.
Had good coverage most of the way except the really rural places.  Text comes through when voice won't.
It worked in Canada too.

My wife has a Trac Fone, $19.99 or $29.99 for the phone, a little nicer phone, same minutes deal plus a double minutes card installed.
When she lost her phone we bought another.  We called to activate and they transferred over her existing phone number and the remaining balance from the lost phone.
Hers didn't work in Canada.

For voice only and text they've worked great.
We're not teenage girls so we don't talk much on them.
No data though.

tmobile

purchase phones up front, no contract, etc. I'm pretty happy with it.

Last I did the math the $200 for a contract + top end phone ended up being a very bad deal, plus I hate contracts.

Service is good in my area too, other people have bad luck with tmobile sometimes

I also have a 4g Clear no contract wifi hotspot $50/mo and that thing works pretty good, service could be better but its unlimited 4g and we pack it around to places watching youtube, browsing on tablets, etc while getting coffee and its worth it, even use VOIP stuff and it works great.

I'm thinking of going to a no contract company.

I'm pretty pissed at Verizon right now.

I quit Verizon and went to Boost Mobile.  $50/month and I get text/talk/web unlimited.  I just had my rate go to $45/month after paying ontime for 6 months.

I don't miss Verison or Sprint (which completely sucks).

I've been using tracfone for 4 years now. Not a teenager, or a twitterer, facebooker etc so don't use a lot of time doing bull sh*&. If I need directions I can still read a map. And there ain't one damned thing you can do on a phone that can't wait till I get to work or home again. Oh, and by the way, I got service on top of Sandia mountain in N.Mex. Service/coverage is great. When I upgraded phones, I wheedled them into carrying over the minutes doubler card, (normally a $100 add-on) because the reason I got a new phone was that the old phone quit holding a charge. If you shop carefully the newer phones have the double minutes included with the phone. I don't feel the need to have the newest/coolest gimmick out there, I just want a reliable phone, and tracfone has given me that, in spades. At $10-40 price range, what's not to like? Best, 44-40.

I am not sure if you have cricket or not in your area? I think the prices are $35 a month for unlimited everything but web and $45 a month for unlimited everything. I now have the $35 a month plan because I never used the web and it seemed like a waste of money.
Cricket actually originated here in the Dayton Ohio area and I was one of the first customers but they have expanded to alot of the larger cities and will be everywhere eventually. I run a business and use my phone alot so paying by the minute seems stupid to me. I can literally call someone 2000 miles away and leave the call on all month and still pay $35.

Tagged to see what options there are for an ATT customer who wants to keep his phone and number.

Give me a cheaper phone service with equal or better covereage and I'd drop ATT in a heartbeat.

I had a trac-phone for a little over a year, worked great, just a basic flip phone. They did bombard me with texts, calls and emails about other offers. other than that no compaints.

ATT contract now, but I get a 22% discount thru my employer.

I used to have T-Mobile. The service was okay, nothing special. The wife and I NEVER used texting; just the phone.  Until we started to get crank texts, which were using up my prepaid minutes rapidly. We could block phone calls, but not texts.  So the phone was not very useful.

I believe there was a class action suit about this, and essentially the prepaid customers got told to take a flying leap, whereas the contract customers can now turn off texts.

What do I have to do to my blackberry to make it work with them?

I use about 1400 minutes per month, 250 texts, and less than 50MB of data.

Buy a Verizon compatible one.

The package I am on is $29/mo for 1200mins/3000texts/100mb data. If you need more talk you can add a minutes only card.

For whatever it's worth I use T-Mobile monthly 4G plan. I only pay $30/mo. and I get 1500 talk/text along with enough data to use the internet for whatever I would need to use the internet for from a phone.  The phone was on sale too and is fairly decent (slide out QWERTY keyboard) but they also have Android smart phones that will work on any of their plans. $30/mo. i s a pretty good deal IMO but you might go with the unlimited $50/mo. depending on your usage.

I use straight talk through wal mart i get 1000 texts and 1000 min for 30 a month. I had it 1 year so far. I like it.
I don't use phones too much though, they a have unlimited for 45 a month

This to a tee. Almost.  Because, I've never been to New Mexico, and still have my original phone.

Airtime is minute per minute, texts are 3 texts per minute.  A 1 year $100 card every Feb (doubled minutes for life of phone) will last me thru the year easily.  Which equals $9 a month.

Page Plus question.   What are the options to pay each month?    Do you have to go to a store to buy another monthly card?   Their website states it auto renews and charges by the minute.   So if you forget to renew one month,  how can they charge you if it's a pre-paid setup?   Thanks

You can buy PIN's online and add them in every month or you can have it setup where they autopay and take it out of your account automatically and even add the PIN's for you so it's essentially just like if you had a regular contract but you don't pay as much .

They have 2 different types of plans:

1.) Just a $$ amount refill card.  You are charged per minute and per text and it comes out of that......that money is good for 4 months and then you have to add something back in or you lose your account.

and

2.) The monthly accounts, like the $29 for 1200/3000/100 or $39 for unlimited/unlimited/20mb.  If you don't pay again at the time the month is up, you lose service.

Metro PCS...that started small in Atlanta..now they are nationwide. I pay 46 unlimited everything. They also have several smart phones. I too mine across Country from GA to Cali. it worked 80% of the time driving across. either. There were the normal dead spots, but all in all it's been fine.

Straight talk. (tracfone) $45/mo unlimited everything. most phones use verizon towers although the new Droid phones use sprint which isnt in my area so i have to wait to become part of the cool crowd. service is always good, phone options are great (i currently have a smartphone that was the best option in my area at the time) customer service, meh, typical people from india. I always request to speak to someone from america that can speak english. The only reason why ive ever had to deal with customer service is while transfering my current phone number. this is a great thing about straight talk. i had a verizon pre paid phone and they give you the option to transfer your phone number from whoever your current provider is. only downside i see which isnt really a big deal is with the app store. itd b great if nokia and prepaid phones could have the same app stores such as amazon.
