I bought my dad a used Springfield Armory Ultra Compact V10. I took it apart to clean it and now  can't seem to get it back together again. The guide rod will not compress enough to fit between the barrel lug and the barrel bushing. After doing a little looking online it appears there is a small plastic piece  that clips on the guide rod to keep the the recoil spring compressed. Is there any way i can get it together without it?

For bushingless 1911s there is a small hole in the middle of the guide rod.  Compress the guide rod assy and insert a paper clip.  Bend paper clip upwards.  Assemble your 1911.  Pull the slide back and remove paper clip.

You should be GTG.

Push the guide rod out through the end of the slide, and grab it tightly. Slide the slide/barrel/guide assembly onto the frame, and drop the slide stop pin through the barrel link. Slowly ease the rod back into the the pistol, and ensure that it has seated properly in the frame.

ETA: You could also push the rod through, and grab onto it with a pair of vice grips wrapped in a shop rag to prevent damage. Once the slide is on, ease the slide all the way back, release the vice grips, and then ease the slide forward.

Alright, now i have it back together and  now the slide will only slide about half way back and the slide is very sloppy on the frame. I am suppose to be giving this to my dad for Christmas and will be very disappointed if it doesn't function.

I owned one years ago but I don't remember any difficulty during assembly. My V10 was very unreliable I hope you have better luck with yours.

Are you sure you have the slide stop inserted through the barrel link?  If it isn't through that link, the gun will bind up.

My first thought was that i didn't have the slide stop through the barrel link. I took it apart and put it back together, paying special attention to that to no avail. I feel like a dumbass! To me it seems lime there must be something that is preventing the spring from expanding all the way, but I can't be sure. This is my first venture into a bushingless 1911

I've been wrestling with this damn thing for hours to no avail. I am about ready to give up on it.
