I applied and interviewed for an hourly sales job for a large auto parts retailer, just trying to get some type of income right now.  Apparently they were impressed and now they want me to interview for a management position.  It's going to be a short interview with several "scenario" questions.

I have absolutely no managerial experience and haven't participated in this kind of interview before. Any idea on what to expect?

They are going to try to find out how you treat or mistreat people and how far you will bend the rules.

I take it any bending of the rules is bad?  Should an answer like "I'll refer to our employee handbook/standard procedures" be appropriate?

"The executive exists to makes sensible exceptions to the general rules."

They'll want to know how you've dealt with employees in the past when you've had to confront them about their performance, behavior, etc., and maybe your financial management experience (as in keeping the P&L straight, balancing the cash registers out every night for the deposits), etc. They'll also want to know if you're reliable because when other employees don't show up, the manager is expected to.

There will be some scenario questions where they put you in a situation and ask you what you would do. The scenario questions they throw at your are probably real-life scenarios that they've seen happen, and it will also give you a hint about what type of work environment you're about to enter. My best advice for the scenario questions is to answer them honestly, and thoroughly. Good luck...it sounds like they already like you, so don't blow it.

Uh, what's P&L?   I don't have any retail experience either, so the interview for retail management kind of threw me.  Reliability isn't a problem- I drove 80 miles each way to a job I hated and was never late.

So basically act the way I did in the first interview.  Got it.
