Last week at my semi annual dental visit, I'm informed that my top two wisdom teeth need to come out.  One has a cavity and the other has a section broken off.  My bottom two are not visible and not causing problems but she said I should still have them cut out.  My dentist made me an appointment with an oral surgeon because she doesn't mess with wisdom teeth.

Tell me what I should expect.

Around $1,200 for all four to be cut out without insurance. Don't suck on straws, dicks, or cigarettes because dry sockets are pretty terrible. The pain isn't too bad, and the painkillers don't hurt either.

It's not a bad thing in all. Expect a little soreness, but you should still be able to eat just fine.

Prepare for the pain.  When I got mine out, all my wisdom teeth were completely erupted so it was like pulling regular teeth.  The worst thing about it was that nasty feeling of getting food down in the holes where the teeth were.  When you have to get them surgically removed, it's a whole nother ball game.

Had all my teeth pulled 10 yrs ago. I'm 61 yrs old and a damn wisdom tooth came in last year. Sucks to be me.

When I had mine taken out, the oral surgeon gave me two options. One, a local anesthetic. I'd be awake during the procedure and I wouldn't like it.
Or two, Pay a little more and be put under for the procedure, and we would be friends when it was over. I had an attack of vaginitis and opted for option #2.

I made arrangements before we started for a prescription for pain meds. I forget now what he gave me, but they were in red capsules, and it was good shit. I survived on soup and mashed potatoes for a few days, but no complications.

Yes. It hurts.

Just get it over with.

They will probably put you to sleep.  That's why your dentist didn't want to mess with it,except for the kick-backs from the oral surgeon.  I had two cut, ripped out while in the usaf.  over 8 shots of novacain.  Very painful.  You will not go through what I went through.  My other two wisdom teeth were coming in perpendicular to the other teeth and I decided to wait, because of the previous pain.  About 5yrs. later the other two teeth came in straight  and did not need pulling.  It did crowed my teeth a little.  Dentists look at wisdom teeth as $$$$$$$ in their bank.  If you CHARGE THEM 1250 bucks per tooth to pull them......they will tell you that "if there is no reason to pull them, then you should not"......they change their tune.

Get them all out at the same time.

Do it under sedation.

There wasn't really much pain for me.  they gave my hydrocodone.  I took one "ahead of the pain", and it made me feel awful.  I just took a couple of Advil every now and then.

Uncle Sam did all 4 of mine for free.

Listen to the doc, do what they tell you, take the meds they give you, don't eat shit they say not too, don't get your shit infected.

It was no big deal for me, some pain, but not too bad. Another guy had his pulled the same day, He got an infection and was hating life.

I had them pulled one side at a time.  Had it done in the morning and went to work in the afternoon.  You'll spit some blood and want to be careful about eating for a day or two.

Lol. I agree.

When I got mine taken out, I got there, sat in the chair, they gave me drugs, I passed out, woke up, told my mom I didn't like the nurse lady who was standing right there because I felt like she didn't like me, and I laughed and cried at every little thing. Then I got home, my mom bought me a milkshake. I said thank you and ate some. Then I threw it all up. I couldn't take the pain meds they gave me (even though my mouth hurt for a long time after) because they made me too sick. So I just took the other meds that you have to take. That is all.

Had mine taken out about 2 years ago.  IIRC, it was a little over $150 a tooth, but mine had all erupted through the gum.

If you want to save some cash contact a dental school in your area. I believe I was quoted less than $100 per tooth.

Pain...there ain't much.  I didn't even touch the pain meds they gave me.

The bleeding...oh God, the bleeding.  I didn't think it was ever going to stop.  I spit red-tinged spit for a week.  The dentist said that was normal.  It sucked.

I was completely under for my procedure.  I came out of anesthesia and apparently commented that they had an extremely well-trained dinosaur sitting in the corner of the operating room and that I wished dearly to pet him.

Before you go in make sure you have a couple bags of frozen peas on hand.  Some old t-shirts and pillowcases may be nice if you're drooling blood.  Have some mushy food available since your jaw may be sore.

I had 3 crowned, one impacted.  45 minute extraction on that one.  I did it all with local since I don't like being knocked out.  I listened to my iPod and a lot of cracking noises while he pulled the offending teeth.

Afterward I had to pick up some Percocet from the pharmacy on the way home, which was fun.  But the doc did say to start taking them immediately because the local would only last so long.

I just rotated the frozen peas from the freezer to my jaw to keep the swelling down, which worked great.  I was eating pizza the next day!

Wisdom Teeth extraction follow the Vasectomy - Murphys law theory/results Paradigm. You will fall into one of three groups:

Group 1:  No biggie. They knock you out. Your mouth will hurt. They give you drugs to take care of that. No major swelling. A few days later you will be good to go with no major swelling. Get it done on a Friday! then you should be good to go for work on Monday morning. Adjust if you are a shift worker.

Group 2:  Starts out same as above. But, your face will swell up and you will look like a chipmunk. You may swell so badly you will have bruises on your face after the fact. Take the drugs. One week later, you will be fine. (I had to have my bottom two cut out too, and this is what sort of happened to me)

Group 3:  Same as above, but, you blow off docs directions, (smoke, chew,, and all that ) dry socket scenario kicks in.  When doc cuts out the bottom two, he really does a number on you, you may actually wake up on the middle of the procedure, and start screaming, but, that damn thing in your mouth prevents proper blood curdling scream. Don't worry, you can still scream in you mind. You will feel like a zombie. You will go home, and pass out. You will wake up and ask closest person to kill you. Take more drugs, and pass out. Your face will look like Mike Tyson used it for a punching bag, and then took a dump on it. Your mouth will taste like dump after a couple days. Make sure you have some vacation or sick leave saved up, you may need to take a week off. You will run out of drugs. Get more. After a week, you will be able to eat again. You may be spitting out tooth and bone splinters for a few years after the fact. That was another cool part i enjoyed.

I fell under the 2nd and 3rd group. And I've woke up twice while sedated and getting my mouth worked on. Good Times.

I had all four done under sedation by an old retired Army Oral Surgeon.  The guy had pulled thousands of wisdom teeth.  My dad was there and he's a surgeon.  He said that guy knew what he was doing.

I was having incredible ear infections the summer after high school.  The infections were so bad and so painful I couldn't stand it.  Nothing helped.  Antibiotics worked a little but the infection would come right back.  I would soak a pillow in a couple of hours with nasty shit poring out of my ears.

It turned out it was my wisdom teeth.  I had so much relief from my ear pain that no matter what happened to my teeth it wouldn't have mattered.

They put in the IV and I went to sleep.  I woke up after an hour or so and in 20 minutes I was GTG.  No pain just some mild discomfort for a few days but nothing at all like the ear pain.  I was already on some serious medicine so not much chance of infection.

Follow instructions and you will be fine.  Don't follow instruction and you will be fucked.

Got mine done about 15 years ago.  Put me to sleep and woke up and they were gone.  I did the stupid thing and ate something before I went. Apparently the sleeping stuff they use make one puke sometimes, which i promptly did when I got home. Did not have much bleeding or pain. It was the strangest feeling to feel with my tongue a hole where there used to be something.  It filled up with meat after a while.

It's the most excruciating pain ever felt. Don't do it. My friend had one done and wasn't ever able to get an erection again.  J/K

It's not that bad they numb you up with a couple shots.

I'd say atleast over $300 each at the surgeon. About $100 at a real dentist.

Dentist suck now days. Back in the day they would pull every tooth in your mouth if you wanted.  I had to go out of town to find one worth a damn after mine retired.

Having mine out gave me a lot of relief.  One was coming in at an angle and the other 3 were badly impacted.  Insurance picked up the tab for it.  I was a little swollen for about 3 days and was off pain meds after 2 days.  The only thing I really did was followed the instructions about sucking through straws, and took my antibiotics.

This. Was $1100 3 of mine to come out at once. Pain wasn't bad. I lit up after 24 hours and was fine but everyone told me I'm crazy.

They put me on the juice.  I was still semi-conscious for it, but didn't feel pain.  I was aware of the hammering and chizeling to get all of my impacted wisdom teeth out.  I had one that was infected, I pushed on my cheek and a bunch of green liquid came out.  I gargled with listerine and salt water and a week after that it was OK. You will look like a chipmunk for a couple days after the procedure.

Hopefully you will have a hot nurse with some big melons to take your mind off things......

My wife had hers out last Friday.  She's in her 30s, good shape.  Said it was nothing compared to having kids.  The worst part for her was the hydrocodone, which made her sick.  She only took the one hydrocodone and has been on large ibuprofen pills ever since.  She's done with those today.  She's been eating a liquid diet, lots of smoothies and soup and whatnot, but last night she had scalloped potatoes and ham––just cut it up small.  The stitches are the dissolving sort, so they go away on their own.  All in all, it went just fine for her.

Cost with dental insurance was $422.  No idea the billed amount.

She's glad she did it on a Friday so she had the whole weekend to recover.  Because of the mouth packed with gauze you will contend with following the procedure, I would plan on a few days off.

My wisdom teeth will kind of ache for a few days every 6 months or so.  Then everything feels fine till the next flair up.  Does anyone else have this?  I really don't want to get them out if I dont have to.

The pain from having them out isn't that bad unless they're impacted or have to use a lot of force to break up your teeth. One of my wisdom teeth was an easy pull but one had to be shattered with a chisel and hammer to be removed. Expect your jaw to be sore. Vicodin are nice. Don't drink with a straw or smoke because you can pull out the blood clot and get dry socket, which is extremely painful.

When I had it done, the stitches on one side were too long and shredded my cheek. I didn't notice it for the first day or so because the area was numbed and I was Comfortably Numb on vicodin.. after that though the raw tissue was pretty painful, so just watch out for that.

Haven't we covered this before?

Huge variation in extracting wisdom teeth..............some can be extracted in 5 seconds.......some take 30 minutes each.

If you are skiddish.........go to sleep.

Most important thing.........DON'T eat ANYTHING firmer than yogurt for three days post operatively if the teeth were impacted.  Most post-op swelling and pain arises from jamming food in the sockets.   Be compulsive with icing your face for the first 24 hours.

Ibuprofen is a great pain med, and very adequate if used properly.

Whatever you do, don't spit, drink from a straw or eat anything solid for 3 days.

If you get dry sockets, your life will suck out loud for a week.  I got dry sockets on two teeth and had migraines and bleeding for the better part of a week.

It really isn't that big of a deal to do it awake.......you will be numb.  Post-op is the big variable to pay attention to.  This will make or break your experience.

The only irritating part about the whole procedure was being woken up and made to sit upright for 10 minutes after it was done.  My GF had one pulled last week and said it and the follow up wasn't painful at all for her.  It's pretty much over hyped.  Enjoy the gas.

This and if I remember correctly, they give you a syringe to flush out food from the tooth socket(s) after eating...   Had all of mine done at once, they knocked me out with IV meds.   No issues, followed Doc's advice on after care as instructed and didn't suffer dry socket.   Scheduled mine on a Friday, returned to work on Monday with no problems, but I also didn't do much over the weekend (as directed).

Can your wisdom teeth replace your molars(remove molars and let wisdom teeth come in)?  I have some bad cavities in my farthest back molars on the top.  I wonder if I could get the bad ones removed and see if the wisdom teeth will replace them(not enough room for both he said).

I had mine done while having other oral surgery. IV sedation, no pain, no big deal. I followed the post-op directions and medication regimen religiously and was good to go within a week.

Last Friday I had a regular tooth pulled while I was awake, and it was excruciatingly painful. He gave me a couple shots, let it numb for a few minutes, then went to work with the drill and chisel or pliers or whatever they use. I had to stop him to ask for another shot because he numbed the back of my mouth, not the area where the tooth was.  It's been almost a week and it still hasn't healed enough to stop hurting or for me to feel comfortable eating anything other than lukewarm soup.

I guess that's the difference between having work done by an oral surgeon and Joe Blow the late night emergency dentist.

I went to the dentist when it felt like I had a bad cavity. I was getting real sharp pains.

They took X-rays, and said "It's the wisdom teeth. The oral surgeon leaves in an hour. Just fo right now."

So we go over a couple rooms, he looks at the X-rays and makes that disappointed "Ugh" sound. You know, the one you make at work when something really difficult or tedious gets dumped on you. (And it wasn't because he wanted to go. The teeth were sideways and really hard to get to)

I went in expecting a filling, so I wasn't really prepared for a 4-wisdom tooth removal. Especially when I started having flashbacks to the tonsillectomy that went REALLY bad. You know the side-effect fine print that casually states "1 person in some really big number has complications." That was me.

Thankfully, there's nitrous oxide for that. I tripped pretty good, and lost all track of time and sensory perception. It seemed to go by fast.

The recovery went well. My face swelled up. The pain was manageable,  and I only really needed to take a vicodin to reduce the pain a bit to fall asleep.

My brother just had his wisdom teeth taken out.  I think he said that getting all four out plus sealing the rest of his teeth cost about $1,900.  Two of his teeth were completely sideways.  He's not having any problems except for a sore jaw, and he's eating liquid food.  I had the same experience years ago.  Just a bit of soreness for a few days, no complications, no big deal.

Cost should be between $1400 and $1800 if you don't have insurance.

With pain, it varies a great deal.  Depends on how good the surgeon is and how difficult the extraction is.  I will say this.  When you get up off the table, you will be in no pain, and you will question whether or not you'll need to go to the pharmacy and fill your pain med prescriptions.  GET THEM FILLED.  You will be glad you did.  Don't wait until tomorrow, don't wait until later.  Whoever is driving you is to stop at the pharmacy and let you get them before you go home.  If you're too drugged out to fill them, get someone to fill them for you, or whatever you have to do.  You WILL need them in about 4 hours.  They gave me hydrocodone and prescription ibuprofen.  I always heard hydrocodone was supposed to be really good, but I honestly was not impressed by it at all.  It only had a moderate pain relief effect for me.  The ibuprofens were far more effective in alleviating my pain, as most of my discomfort was from inflammation and swelling where the incisions had been made.  The ibuprofen dealt with the inflammation quite well.

I would try to have the surgery done on a thursday and return to work monday or tuesday.  Follow all the post op directions the doc gives you religiously.  If you don't, you can have some complications that will make you wish the doc had killed you instead of done surgery  I didn't have any such problems because I did as I was instructed.

I was woozy and I think I was listing to port a bit when I got up from the operating table, but I still had enough sense to walk more or less straight, not fall down or trip over anything, and count out the money correctly when I paid my bill.

I was knocked the fuck out, I remember them placing the IV, then lights out, no counting backwards or any of that shit, just waking up in the room with everything already cleaned up.  I had never been knocked out before, but it was like being completed fucked up drunk.  They had to physically help hold me up and walk me to the car, with me running into walls and shit along the way.  I don't remember really anything of the drive home (I was driven home).

I rotated ice packs from the freezer to my face.  I'd do about 15-20min left side, then 15-20min right side, then back again, so I constantly had an ice pack on one side or the other for the entire remainder of that day and night and the next morning as well until I hit the 24 hour mark.

I was given antibiotics, ibuprofen 800mg and vicoden prescriptions during my original consult with the oral surgeon, I had them all filled and waiting for me when I got home.  I took the antibiotics and ibuprofen like clockwork until they were gone, the ibuprofen controlled the pain and swelling to manageable levels, though I did swell some between days 2-5.  I was swollen more on the side where they had the extra tooth, they said it was a real bitch getting them out.

I had 2 erupted, 2 impacted and 1 partial impacted teeth IIRC.  Yes, they charged me for 5 extractions.

My diet for several days following the removal consisted of protein shakes, and sugar free jello pudding with protein powder mixed in.  I lost 6 pounds in the week following the removal.

I had a followup 1 week after the removal where they showed me the wonderful bullshit of flushing my sockets out once or twice a day until they are gone (possibly up to 2 months).  No one shared that shit with me prior to that day.

That said, after I did it once or twice, and got used to it, now, after I eat, I cant fucking wait to flush that shit out, I can feel the food packed in there and it feels awesome to get it out.  I found that in addition to the syringe they gave me, some tongue depressors to hold my cheek back, and a flashlight headlamp are a huge help to see what the hell i'm doing in there and to make sure I get all of the stuck food out.  Don't be overly aggressive with the squirting until you have healed a bit, bump the inside of the socket with the tip of the syringe, or squirt too hard, and it will hurt like hell until the gums heal a bit.

Whatever pain pills they gave me made me REALLY happy, but a little paranoid. I was convinced the Christmas tree in our living room was teaming up with our dog to steal my banana. This was in the spring too......

Damn dog ate my bananas.
