Alcohol related incidents, big No-No. Financial problems, bad Juju. Anything that can bring dishonor or discredit upon our agency, see ya!

Most departments do, but it will vary by agency, and in some by assignment.  For instance, if the officer is subject to call-out, then there would be rules about booze and being available to answer the phone.

Some states also have accreditation boards, POST for instance, that may have ethical standards separate from the department.

I had a guy filed a complaint against me for being rude to him...while I was off-duty...  His version of rudeness is me telling him to wait while a marked unit came to file a police report after he tried to fit his Chevy 2500 into a parking space of a miata and struck my ex's vehicle and attempted to leave, and when the marked unit showed up, the uniformed officer and I had a conversation while he was writing the jackhole a cite, so I'm being rude...  People become full on retarded when they find out we're cops when we're off, which is one of the main reasons I only spend time with other cops or firefighters or dispatchers.  Any way to get back at "the Man" even when he's just trying to enjoy his off time.

Yes, lots of them. For one, we are technically never allowed to be drunk off-duty. The catch all when they can't find one to hang you with is "Conduct Prejudicial to the Good Order of the Department".

ETA: The "Unfit for Duty" rule with being drunk off-duty is the main reason why no off-duty cops stuck around to be witnesses in the Paul Heidelberger shooting back in the early '90s. There were numerous off-duty cops there but they knew they'd be jammed up instantly and possibly fired if they came forward because it happened on a well known strip of bars and they were all drinking.

But not all laws apply.

In VA it's illegal to CCW and consume alcohol, but an off duty LEO can carry and drink if he wants to.

Well, here locally, they fire them for anything, up to and including taking pics of a pretty girl sitting on your patrol car.

Austin PD recently fired or suspended their entire SWAT team.   Why?  One idiot wrecked his  car after drinking at a party.  The reasoning is, the others should have stopped him, even though they WEREN'T at the party.

Whats horrible is how  Austin PD and a couple of the smaller local depts  treat the officers that shoot someone.  Best shoot in the world, does not matter. You are going to get fired or jammed up for SOMETHING.

It also seems that having a Facebook page is the kiss of death.  Same goes for firefighters.

To clarify, this crap has been going on a lot longer than his tenure down there. If anything, the abuses have slowed down.  They don't go out and interview your wife during divorce proceedings any more.

(The internal affairs guys were looking for something to fire someone with and thought the wife would supply dirt. That backfired BIGTIME)
