I've got a 2.5 year old son who I would like to get health insurance for. I can put him on my plan at work for $521.45 per month. It's a pretty good plan with Regence. I've been looking around, and it seems like the only options if I insure the little guy outside of my work would be Regence, which isn't doing open enrollment until April, and Assurant/Lifewise of Washington, which both have a huge number of reviews describing them as horrifically bad. My son is a pretty healthy kid, so I don't think I really need a full blown plan like I've got at work. I can afford to pay for regular Dr visits, so I'd be happy with a catastrophic/brain tumor plan, but I'm not really sure what to look for, and am concerned that all the insurers sound pretty horrible as far as reviews go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a PPO plan which pays for 3 visits per year and I only pay what the insurance company pays for everything else. 80/20 after the deductible. Mine is $105/month. |

That number seems HIGH if it's only for him. Like really high. Really! OP - I would opt for the catastrphic coverage plan and put the rest in a savings account ot cover the "usual" stuff. And don't forget to negotiate discounts with the docs if you are paying cash. |

These are the rates. It's just gotten silly expensive. The catastrophic plans look to all be less than $150 or so. The $521 just seems really excessive. Employee Only: $0 Spouse: $733.75 monthly Child (ren): $521.45 monthly Family: $1255.20 Monthly Then that is definitely excessive. Your employer has terrible insurance coverage benefits. Seek private insurance. |

Yup, the way I understand it is that my employer happens to have a ton of VERY unhealthy employees and lots of cases of cancer, so we are paying out the nose to cover all of them. |

I used to be on a PPO plan thru my wife. We have 3 kids and ourselves to cover. We switched to a High Deductible Plan right after the last kid was born. I love it. I bet I pay about half of what I used to pay for medical costs. Most doctors will listen if you tell them 'I am not doing that silly CYA because it comes out of my pocket'. Definitely look into the high deductible plans and start putting the money you saved on premiums in an account to cover the costs of doctor visits. |
