[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Neighbors....oh boy (Page 1 of 5)

First before I tell this tale, I would like to preface with the fact that I am not going to try and deny any responsibility for my actions (well more like inaction to be honest), and this story will probably come off as whining.
Anyway, so this morning I woke up at around 10 A.M. fed my dogs and put them outside so they can do their business. After I put my dogs outside I went back to sleep (which was admittedly very stupid of me, but then again I was quite tired due to me being up late the previous studying for an exam coming up on Tuesday). One or two hours later there is a knock at my door, and it woke me right up. The person who was at the door was this woman from down the street, who did not look particularly happy at the time. The first thing out of her mouth was "Like, oh my God, your dogs have been barking for two hours! If you don't get them to stop I will call the cops!" I decided to comply, simply because it wasn't exactly worth the trouble, and I also knew in a sense I was in the wrong (my dogs are kind of loud and all), however I was kind of mad about this (I mean hey who wouldn't be mad at some woman you barely know threatening to call the cops because your dogs are barking). Again, admittedly I was in the wrong for leaving my dogs outside for one or two hours (and apparently they were barking a lot in that time). However I normally do not leave them out there for anything longer than 20 or 30 minutes, so them barking for that long outside is not a normal occurrence (and she was the only one of my neighbors to make this complaint, and she is from down the street not next door). So what I have to ask is was her threat justified? And if she did actually call the cops, would the cops actually do anything (it wasn't like it was that early in the morning, and it was just my dogs barking)? Supposing she does this again, how should I handle it? Reason I ask is if she is being oversensitive about dogs barking on and off outside for about an hour or two, I'm worried that she might do this again even if they are out for 20 or 30 minutes (admittedly though, my dogs can loud, so I can understand why she might be mad). |

You should be happy you have such a nice neighbor.
They are YOUR dogs. Why in the fucking hell should she have to listen to YOUR dogs bark for 2 hours? I'd be pissed too. I keep my dog inside. I strive to make sure my dog doesn't piss off my neighbors. I just wish some of them had as much courtesy as I do. Frankly I think it should be open season on any dog who barks constantly and their owners leave them out to bother the neighbors. |
|
If she's like me, she attempted to resolve the problem with you personally. This is called being a good neighbor and is rare these days.
She also let you know that next time she will escalate. This is fair warning and less of a threat. She has a right to enjoy her property and not be bothered by constant yapping. |

u fell asleep and left ur dogs outside barking for 2 hours and a pissed off neighbor instead of actually calling the cops came over and told you she would next time? Whats the problem here? ![]() The problem is that she threatened to call the cops on account of my dogs barking outside for 2 hours......at like 10 or 11 A.M. And she isn't even my next door neighbor, she is from down the street (we are talking almost on the other side of the block). I mean it's one thing if it's 5 or 6 in the morning, or really late at night and there is noise like that, but late (relatively) in the morning for an hour or two? I mean it seems a little excessive to threaten to call the cops (I realize she could have just called them, but even the threat for something kind of minor like that seems excessive to me). |

what is wrong with that lady? how rude? I would have just shot your dogs to stop them from barking and waking you up. of course I would be considerate enough to use a suppressed .22 so as not to have awaken you with gunfire Well it's you being considerate that counts. |

Weren't you trying to sleep? I mean, who is she to wake you up at 10 or 11am? I bet she had to stop whatever she was doing to bother you, too. It's not like she or her husband needs to sleep because they work late, right? Wow. She sure sounds inconsiderate. A true neighbor would've brought you cookies. |

I think you live behind me. The idots behind me leave their dogs out all the time and they bark at everything. I mean everything. I have talked with the husband and all he does is say sorry and he brings in the dogs for a bit and than he lets them out again to bark at clouds, people other dogs and just anything that that the dogs think that need to bark at, the problem is they do not come out to get them. After asking a few times about their dogs barking I got sick of it and called the cops. My other neighbors have too but nothing has really happend to the owners (that I know of). Now I stand at their fence and yell at the dogs and towards their house till he comes out shoots me a dirty look and brings the dogs in. I tell him thanks in a sarcastic voice and walk away.
Keep your mutts muzzled and inside if they bark at everything under the sun. Yes I have a dog and he does bark but I bring him in when he starts it up. She did you a favor by telling you. Most folks just pick up the phone and call it in. |

Control your dogs. For some reason, Virginia citizens are disproportionately inclined to let their dogs bark continuously at the expense of their neighbors...The "Welcome To Virginia" signs on the highway should also say, "If you buy a home or land in this commonwealth, you MUST fence in and/or chain up dogs outside so that they bark 24/7 and disturb your neighbors". It is out of control and rude.
But, your neighbors seem a little uncooperative, since they could have spoken nicely to you first, without threats. My neighbors were very cooperative when I spoke to them nicely after listening to their two dogs (that live outside) 24/7 for a year after they moved in. |

IMHO the neighbor could have been a bit less bitchy, but I don't think she was in the wrong |

Most folks just pick up the phone and call it in. My dogs aren't like that though, they really only bark at other people on occasion, and I ALWAYS bring them inside when they start barking. This was the first time I've left them out for that long, and they bark infrequently at shit. Again, I'm not going to even try to deny responsibility for my actions in any way, I was in the wrong for leaving my dogs outside. But I doubt that they were barking for two hours STRAIGHT, as I have never once seen them do that (and when they are outside, they normally don't bark that much). To me it seems a little excessive to even threaten to call the cops (you are right, she was nice to only do that as she could have done a lot worse.) It just seems a little excessive to me considering the situation (dogs that don't bark that much, being left outside for two hours, and only barking infrequently). Edit: To clarify, she does not work any late shifts. She is a housewife. |

Not to start a dogpile, but she might work a swing or graveyard shift and just got to sleep within the last few hours before your dogs started barking. |

If someone from down the street had to come to complain about your dogs, you should apologize to all your immediate neighbors and make and effort to stop being inconsiderate.
Nobody in the world wants to listen to some random person's dogs barking for hours. Would you like to listen to some neighbor's kid banging away on a drum set outside for hours while you prep for an exam? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Sorry OP, sounds like you're pissed you got called out. She is completely justified to say next she will call the cops. Control your dogs. |
