Funny thing I've seen and sadly even in today's economy it is still common.

Would you shave off your beard for a job?  One of the requirements to wear a respirator is that "[no] Facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function" but sadly I've seen, in the last year, about five guys just turn around and leave when we told them they had to shave.

Is a beard worth several months of good overtime work?  It will grow back, I'm sure but the excuses I've heard typically focus on their SO liking their facial hair or that it's their "winter beard."

Of course it is their choice to leave but how important is your facial hair vs a job?

Thats what I do.

Even for the job I have now which is barback/secuity, I showed up clean shaven and with a haircut.

But I have since regrown my beard.

I personally wouldn't turn down a job because I had to shave, but I can understand guys who would.

I've had a goatee and mustache for about 3 years. It would be a big change for me to shave it off, probably comparable to shaving your head for a job. It takes a long time to get used to it, and you feel like a different person.

Choosing a haircut or beard over a job is idiotic.

All depends, what are you paying?

eta: and am I unemployed? 10 bucks an hour and I'll keep the beard and the shitty (albeit higher paying) job I've got now.

January 1st, 1985.

Admiral James D Watkins banned beards in the US Navy.

I never have had anything good to say about that SOB since.

So, yes I would and did.

Fucker.

In my line of work I don't foresee it ever being a problem (except for the odd occasions I set my face on fire) but I have and I would again IF the job was worth it.

The presumption with most is that they were on unemployment.

Also, most of these people were trade workers.

I wear a beard in small part so I cannot be required to wear a respirator.  If the conditions are really dangerous enough to wear a respirator, I have to wonder about absorption through the skin as well.  In my mind, a moon suit makes more sense.  In any event,  I'd rather find a job (like I have) where a beard or not does not matter.

I also cannot seem to work for very long (not much more than a year) at a company that has more than about 10 employees, while fewer than 5 is that much better.

Then they are fucking losers.  Plain and simple.  If they were currently employed and this was just another offer on the table, so be it.  But if they are on the dole or just taking up space, then there is no excuse for not shaving off hair that grows back.

There should be a mechanism in place to stop unemployment payments when someone refuses to take a job based on such ridiculous criteria.  Or when someone refuses to take a job that pays equal to or greater than their unemployment check.

Absolutely imperative.

I do not look right without a beard of some kind. Vanity takes precedence for the moment.

Desperation changes things.

I kept a clean shaven face for 20 some years; chicks preferred it and my job required it, I just shaved but hated it.  It was part of the routine.  Met my wife several years ago and she actually...........get ready for it.........PREFERS I have a beard.  All I gotta do is trim it every now and then, I'm good to go.  My job no longer requires sealed respirators/face masks, so I'm living good.  Fucking hate shaving, man.

ETA:  Yeah, I'd shave if I had to, but then I'd have to deal with the wife......but money coming in also has it's benefits.....she'd deal.

Maybe they already had something else lined up where they could keep their beard? I don't know, but it's usually a good idea to consider reasonable alternatives to conclusions like "they'd rather be jobless with a beard than shave and get a job!"

I had to maintain a short goatee for my duties inside a Level 3 Bio safety research facility, it was no problem what so ever. If this job is anything like mine was you get fit tested X times a year and know what N-95 works best.  Hair grows back, even though somewhat very slow at this point in my life.

Mrs L this morning ... "From the looks of your face I guess I can forget lunch."
