My phone prompted me to download the new operating system 5.0.1 and silly me did so without backing up my pictures/audio/contacts (is there a way to back up contacts?). Now it wont start up and is stuck in recovery mode (white screen). Is there ANY way to be able to save my pictures and contacts?

At this point I don't care if the phone ever works again. I just can't loose those pictures and contacts. I've lost all trust in this crappy phone. I'm tired of loosing my contacts and not knowing how to back it up some way.

It is AT&T. And yes I really do miss having those SIM cards. I've got military contacts in my phone that I can't afford to loose.

Maybe I've just completely missed it but shouldn't there be a way through ITunes to back up your contacts to your computer? Seems pretty logical.

Usually when you plug the phone into Itunes it makes a backup of your data.

If you did that once you install the new OS it should give you an option to restore.

Another option is to store your contacts in Outlook, Google etc. and that way if you need them they are always there no matter what happens to your phone.

I use Outlook and every time I connect the phone to Itunes it crossreferences the contacts on the phone with Outlook and updates.

It should have automatically backed your shit when you started updating.. It did mine at least. My iPhone 3GS has a sim card that my contacts are auto stored too, yours doesn't?

Before you do anything else, go into your PC, find the backup files, and back THEM up.

What is the name of the folder that ITunes usually backs up your phone to?

Is there a pin hole in the top of your iPhone?

All phones have sim cards the iphone is no different.  If you plugged in your iphone to do the update it will/should have automatically backed it up. Just givei time the new back up took forever on my phone just leave it alone and it will do its thing.

Not ALL phones. Depends on your service provider. EG- Verizon Wireless uses flash mem instead of a SIM card if I remember correctly.

You should be able to restore the phone from your previous backup.
You can see the backups listed if you go to iTunes, Preferences and click the Devices tab.

iTunes will recognize a phone in recovery mode and ask you if you want to restore from the backup.

Restored my phone. Seems to working now. Still have my contacts. The first time it did this I lost ALL of my contacts. The only thing missing is one picture I took an hour after I had last backed it up. It was a hilarous picture too. College student had fallen asleep playing WOW. Neck limp, head just above the key board and headset on. His hand was still on the mouse like he was playing. Was hoping I didn't loose that one. But as long as I still have my contacts were good I suppose.

While the hangup was the phone's fault, your failure to back it up or understand it's workings is not.

I'd have lost a shit ton of data when my 3GS got lost a few weeks ago, if it were any other phone all of my stuff would be gone (it took a swim to the bottom of a drainage ditch, couldn't find it).

Instead, I bought a new 4S, restored from my last back up, and I only lost a couple notes I'd made that day. Very few other phones can do that.
