I work in the car business and have for 7 years. I have been around it for my entire life. I have been a member here for almost 3 years and been a lurker for about 6. I still have yet to see a profession that everyone hates so much. I mean you guys bitch about car salesman more than you bitch about Abortion Clinic Dr. Or even Lawyers for that matter. I mean the thing that bothers me the most is that 99% of the people who are just trashing them in no way have there facts even close to right. I have helped a good many of people on here when they were looking to buy cars. Hell I spent no telling how many hours telling more in detail stuff about the car business than you will ever find on the internet. I just wish you guys could see that there are decent people in the car business and quit referring to all car salesman as scum. Thats like saying all gun owners are nothing more than right wing radical terrorists. I mean leave it alone and realize there are a few bad apples who give a entire class of hard working Americans a bad name.
Flame Suit On. |

I've been in the car business since 1998 and have owned part of a dealership since 2004. I agree with everything the OP said. A few months back, a competing dealer got in a motorcycle with a sidecar, which is something I've been wanting for a long time. I went in there, talked with a salesman, was treated like absolute shit and he didn't even know I'm his competition. I ended up buying the bike because it was stupid cheap for what it was, but I understand why people hate the average car salesman so much. It would be nice if you guys would keep in mind that we're not all like that. |
|
Car salesmen will get my respect when I can walk in, tell you the price I want to pay, and then you say yes or no on the spot w/o having to go "see the manager" and other BS. I know how much shit is, I can use the internet. I don't want to play the hi-low game with you. That is why I deal by e-mail and walk in with a check already made out. If you can't sell me the vehicle we were talking about for the amount on the check, I'll see you later pal. Edit: My favorite game to play with car salesmen. I e-mail 2 or 3 local dealerships with what I want. I will then play each one against the other as far as pricing goes. I will also "mistakenly" respond to one dealership with the other guys e-mail so that they can see that I am indeed playing them. It is kinda fun when I think about it. I just did this for my Dad on a trade he was wanting to do. He ended up getting the new vehicle $2250.00 below invoice ($2k rebate plus $250.00 below negotiated, I know about dealer holdback) and only depreciated his trade-in $2000 from what he paid for it 4 years and 2 days prior. |

The entire general discussion is about hate.
The number one vocation getting the most hate would be cops - head-n-shoulders above the next closest one. Car sales men a slimeballs for the most part and I won't waist more than a few minutes with the slimy ones - and will kick one to the curb in a heartbeat and grab another out of the line if it suits me. The mechanics are liars and I don't trust them farther than I can throw them. I make them prove any and all claims to me. |
|
Most will give you a bunch of BS and then F&I gives you more BS. You folks in sales overpromise sales and when customers go to service they find out what was really sold to them, BS. You asked Example? You sell a maintence plan and tell the customer/owner all you have to do is fill it up and drive it. Service tells you all you purchased was oil/filter changes. |

Because generally speaking, everyone who has bad things to say about car salesmen has had a bad experience with car salesmen, myself included. I bought a truck this summer and it was pure hell. I've never been told so many lies in so short a period of time. Hell, I know car salesmen personally and I think they're all shady as fuck, including the guy I ended up buying my truck from. He just happened to be the least shady of them all. ETA: You may not fit the stereotype, but you'd be the extreme exception to the rule. |
My persoanl favorite was going to look at a car we saw online for x price. We neglected to mention that to the dealer. He gave us a price on that EXACT vehicle for 15% over. After negotiation, he talked to his boss and his bosses boss, and said the absolute best they could do was 5% over. I showed him the ad I printed off.
<––––––––––-walked out the door. ETA: The advertised price was right where it should have been for that car. It was no typo. I think the biggest mistake salesmen make is forgetting many people have thoroughly researched the vehicles before they ever talk to a dealer. I spend weeks on the internet before darken a door. |

| It just erks me to no end with the hell you guys give carsalesman. There are honest ones out there. I know of a good bit of them. I know alot of dishonest ones as well but that is with any profession. Some of the biggest crooks I know are in the contracting business. Crooked carsalesman are becoming a thing of the past. The rules and regulations are getting very strict and that is getting rid of a lot of them. I know how pissed everyone gets when all gun owners are lumped in with Lee Harvey Oswald so why not lay off car salesman a little. I mean it just gets old hearing the same old shit over and over. I could sit here and tell you the crooked shit customers have done to me for the rest of the night but no one wants to talk about the times each of you have screwed a dealer when buying a car. |
|
I have bought many cars, I have also bought many motorcycles and boats. I have had good experience with most of the motorcycle salesmen, and good experiences with some of the car salesmen as well. I was going to buy a new Corvette several years back, and I had cash in hand (in account with available funds)......I went into a dealership after looking on the lot, and had the exact one I wanted. I was told that they would be closing in an hour and a half, and that I would need to come in tomorrow to pick up the car. I then asked if I gave him a 1K tip, if he could get it through that evening. He told me no way,..........I told him if not that I would find someone who would get me in the car I wanted, his response was "It is closing time buddy, Good luck with that" I called a dealer in Canton, TX that says he will meet you at 2AM just to look at a car, and gives a 24 hour number, which goes to the owner. He told me no problem, I drove a ways out of my way. When I was through, he had the car filled with gas, waxed and ready to go. His name was Lewis, and he gave awesome service, and I greatly enjoyed my 'vette.
I also had a motorcycle dealer that offered to take me to Vegas, on a ride, if I would purchase the bike from him, it was a 2000 MV Agusta, after the break in period, he asked me when I wanted to go, and even got me a suite in Vegas. There are plenty of good sales people out there, there are also plenty of pond scum too. All of my recent purchases have been from live auctions, and I have been able to afford exotics for the price of economy class imports. I prefer the auction nowadays over a salesman. I can sell myself on the car. But I would not hesitate to go back to Lewis, he was a good guy. If I am spending 60K cash on a car, I expect a little bit of service beyond a free cup of coffee, and acting like you appreciate my business should not be out of line. -PC- |

None of you salesmen is the one that sold my sister a 1998 Toyota Camry with 231,000 on it for $4500 are you?
If so I'd like to ask why a major dealership would be selling a used car with such high mileage on it. OP sold it. It's cool though...that car was a creampuff. Little old lady, Padadena...yada yada yada |

Because I don't like being lied to, cheated, and being deceived. Every last car salesman I've ever had to speak to has attempted to do this to me. Why are automobiles are such a damn hassle to buy. I don't believe this to be true. Unless A. Your credit is bad. B. your an ass hole they hate seeing walking through the door. C. You have just had really bad luck finding a salesman. |
|
I went to a used car dealer about 18 years ago. She tried to sell me a car I didn't want, even after I told her point blank I didn't want it. I've never gone back to a dealership; every other car I bought since then was purchased from individuals selling on the classifieds. OTOH, my mom and dad always bought their cars from a guy they knew at the local Chevy dealership. You might be a great guy, but I have no reason to buy from you. |
|
Many car salesmen will not only screw customers, they'll screw each other. The last time I was shopping for a car for myself, a new model I was interested in seeing was trickling into the dealerships and impossible to see first hand as they were pre-sold. Finally, a dealership had one that wasn't sold, so I go there to see this car; the salesman can't find it. Turns out, another salesman had hidden it way at the back of the lot in hopes of making a sale as soon as he could call a customer. The store manager was not amused. I don't trust a salesman at an independent lot as far as I could throw one. They'll deny obvious defects while standing by the vehicle or even riding along. Not many at major dealerships, either. |

You have just had really bad luck finding a salesman. On the last car I bought, I was told that I *had* to purchase the extended third party warranty on a used car, before the lender would approve the loan. You and I both know this is absolute bullshit. Why on God's green earth would you defend shit like this? And don't lie to me, and pretend that this kind of asshatery isn't common. This shit is endemic to the industry, and you know it.

I don't say it only about car salesmen, but salesmen in general. I've met only a few in my life that I trusted at all. There are honest ones out there, my father in law is one but there are a lot of them that aren't.
Good rule for life: Don't trust a salesmen, ever. It's just bad policy. Not to say you are a bad person, like I said some are good people but sales in general seems to have a disproportionate number of conmen to honest men |

When I can buy a car without being lied to after taking a day off work and driving 6 hours one way to look at said car, then maybe I won't have such negative feelings towards car dealers. But until then, it is my experience that every single car salesman I have EVER encountered is a fucking liar. OP, I don't mean to imply that you fit into this category. |

You have just had really bad luck finding a salesman. My credit is awesome, I bring a lot of cash to the table, and I am a nice guy. I still had to wade through a ton of sleaze the last time I looked for a truck. Even the Lexus dealership tried to fuck me over for small change, thinking I wouldn't find out that their "special treatment to get the smoke smell out" was just douching the car with aerosol. Then they were indignant when I returned it. I'm damned glad that I forced them to write a return clause into the contract. Fuck those guys. |

in the 21 years i've been a Ford service technician, i can only think of a handfull of honest salesmen. the business from sales to service is greed driven and dishonest. it's a no win for the customer, that's why i had business cards made up and have a growing side work business. i will not take work out of the shop, but if someone asks for my personal help, i'll do what i can.
people have a right to be hatefull to dealerships, we have earned the reputation for being theives, hell, i hate dealerships, i'm the first person in line that gets stolen from, it's just downhill from there

I hate being lied to and jerked around for hours on end. I hate the whole fucking business model. Be ready to walk. Give the salesman and his boss a deadline, that's what I do. I bought a car (Rest In Peace little Siver Vibe) way up in Carlinville, Illinois, and I would do it again. Far better price than around Big City dealers, and the paperwork was done in 20 minutes. I nearly stopped a sale at a closer dealer that drug out the check writin' part of the deal. I had to hunt up the manager to tell them to get it done after hours of waiting. |

I never said it was O.K. to lie, cheat, or decieve a customer. All I said was that it amazed me for a group of people who will go nuts if someone lumps gun owners in with nut bags is willing to lump one profession all in together. There are crooks in every profession. I know that there are alot of crooks in the car business but I also know alot of really good people who are in the business that do none of the things you mentioned. |

What other product do you go to purchase where you are challenged to a game of "Let's see how much this guy is willing to pay for this"?
How many other products can be purchased for one price at a given location...and, for THOUSANDS less (or more) at another location, based on how much commission they are able to squeeze out of the buyer? People hate you, because of the way cars are sticker priced, and the game required to get to the selling price. |

Here's an example: On my last new vehicle purchase( a Toyota Tundra) I had worked the deal to my satisfaction and started the paperwork out front with the salesman. When I went back to the sales managers to finalize the paperwork he stuck an $800 dollar addition on to the contract for "paint treatment". I read thru the contract and demanded to know what the fuck this $800 addition was and to remove it RFN! Turned out it was a goddam wax job! Then they tried to stick a $250 "Towing Fee" in there too. WTF is that? "Oh,its in case you break down we tow your vehicle back to the dealer. 30mile radius from dealership". I live over 50miles from the dealer and they damn well knew that from my address. Take it off NOW or you can stick that truck up your asses. Fucking assholes. They were hoping I'd just sign off and roll that into the loan. ETA: The real pisser here was this was a guy I had bought TWO cars from previously. |
