Guy I work with has one for sale.

I haven't seen it.  He says it is like new, in the box.

He is asking $1,400.

I'd like to expand my collection, but I don't know anything about Colt revolvers.

I almost bought a Colt Trooper that I thought was a steal for $600.
But then I learned $600 was an average price.

I'd prefer a 6" barrel on a 357 magnum, but I'd also hate to let a good deal pass me by.

Anyone know about these things?

Dunno about that, checking gunbroker it doesn't seem too out of line.

Take your $1,400 and convert it to gold or silver.  Wait a couple of years.  When times get real hard, you can cash in your gold or sivler and buy guns cheap.

Would sell on gunbroker for $2500.

If the Python is in nice shape, that price is VERY reasonable.

If the Python is in pristine, or near pristine condition, that price is OUTSTANDING.

In either case, if you have the money: go buy it. SOON!

In my area late model, blued, kinda used, no box goes for $1200-$1300.

Excellent shape with box? $1400.00 is a decent price, they have not been going down in price.

I would buy it.

Put it this way––Are there any current production handguns with the same level of quality?  And what are new revolvers selling for taday?

Smith and Wesson are currently selling new yet crappy schmoed-out MiM-infested guns for around a thousand dollars.   I would rather have a superb American classic for just a few dollars more.

Just buy that gun.  Gun deals like this make me wish I was an American.  You are very lucky because if I lived in the US that Python would be mine!

I've never seen an "elite".

I talked to him about it again today and gave him a hard time for not bringing in pics on his cell phone.

Turns out his cell phone doesn't have a camera.  oops.

He said "you know what a brand new gun looks like fresh out of the box".

Duh.

He said "this one looks better than that".

Okay, I'll go take a look at it.  We live in opposite directions.  A drive to see it will be about 80 miles one way.

I'll go look at it Friday.  I don't think it is going anywhere.

if its a ELITE   then it is a straight custom shop only gun

they made the elite after the stopped production of them for normal sale. after that they  came out of the custom shop on a limited run and  they called them  python elites

I traded a 4" Stainless Elite years ago to a Colt Collector for a Colt Combat Commander that he was selling at the time for just over a $1000.00 (NIB) straight up, and I've since seen Elites sell for between $1200-$1500.00 depending on condition/caliber/finish.

Seriously, I'd tell him that you can spend $1,000.00 and nothing more. And have cash in your hand when you say it. Tell him that the economy sucks and people just aren't paying $1,400.00 for pistols right now. It's not lowball enough to insult him, but don't budge off that price.

Pretty silly thing to say.

"Quality" of a firearm may or may not even be a factor.  Rarity and condition have far more to do with how a firearm retains it's value.

O.P. needs to consider if that gun will be shot, or will be a safe queen.  A gun like that is more of a collector piece.  I would much rather have other toys at that price.

Meh, if it's been shot already, shoot it.

There are tons of unfired pythons out there if that is what one desires.

What do you suppose would happen to it's value if Colt started producing them again?

I suspect the value of my Delta Elite UB Stainless went down when Colt started making the 10mm 1911 again.

Nothing.

Colt will not make Pythons like they used to at any price.  They supposedly have all of the old machinery to restart python production, but they do not have the skilled manpower and gunsmiths to do much more than repairs and refinish to existing guns.   They could easily train people to do the finishing, but it would all be based on CNC production and likely a different spring system and no hand-fitting for the moving parts.

This is analogous to pre-63 winchesters increasing in value despite new production.

I agree with ypu on all accounts.

If Colt ever brought back the I Frame most likely it would suck, as Colt would cut every corner imaginable.during production.
