Kubric was a whack job, but that is one of the most...intersting movies ever made.  It's scary how not-dated it looks, compared to every other space movie made even close to that long ago.

Not a single LED/LCD light in the movie... except for the NewsPads they were reading at the dinner table.

I was thinking the very same thing the last time I saw it.

It would be interesting to look at it again and try to figure out why it's not dated.

Sets? Lighting? Technogogy?

Because Kubrick was a genius.

He knew that if you're going to do something, you do it right! He decided to make a "good sci-fi" film, went to a great genre author to ask him to expound upon a story of his, then made one of the greatest films of all time.

"Pull my finger, Dave."    (An outtake that SHOULD have happened.  )
That movie manages to avoid looking dated because it avoided taking visual cues from the pop culture of the time when it was filmed.  Kubrick went for a very utilitarian, efficient, and simple look about every set and prop.     Something as simple as a video screen:  Why should it be anything but a video screen?  Why is it even necessary to have a frame?    Why should a computer terminal consist of anything but a simple display and a simple keyboard?

He was very forward thinking.   He foreshadowed the styling of today's Apple products,  almost 40 years before Apple created them.

Kubrick realized that any technology that was cutting edge in 1969 would be very dated in 2001,  so he avoided including anything that

looked like 1969 or older technology.

What I think is particularly visionary are the spacecraft used in the movie.

The Orion shuttles look like they should be in service TODAY.   They LOOK like an advanced version of our shuttles.

The double wheel space station design is as valid a concept today as it was in 1969.

Using centrifugal force to simulate gravity, with a synchronously driven docking bay for easy docking,

is a totally valid idea.

I'm deeply disappointed that we don't have one YET, 10 years late!

Couple of friends have it.  Another response Siri will give is: "That is a very insensitive thing to ask someone like me."
