Do some sit ups.

I usually get a pinched nerve in my neck from stupid shit.  Usually earlier in the day.....  No back pain for the last 10+ years.

I dropp3d the shoulder and laid in the floor afterwards.

Sitting hurts.
Laying hurts.
Standing is unbearable.

Thankfully, no. I also exercise my back muscles a few days a week - something everyone should do.

If you've got extra pounds, lose them.
If you've got a shitty mattress, buy a better one.  Same goes for whatever chair you sit in most often.

Also, deadlifts (conventional and Romanian), front squats, good mornings, hyperextensions, decline sit-ups, russian twists, hanging leg/hip raises,  and any other exercise that's going to seriously strengthen your core.  None of this swiss/bosu ball pastel frou-frou bullshit bullshit.

edit: obviously, deadlifts, etc, can wait until you heal up a bit

Just had an MRI done this morning on my lower back, they think I have a herniated disk

pain is driving me crazy, shooting down my left leg and making me uncomfortable no matter what I'm doing.

About a dozen years ago I was bent over the sink brushing my teeth.  I felt something move in my lower back and went directly to my knees.  My wife had to help me get set down on the edge of the bed and get me dressed. It took two people to get me out to the car.  By the time I got to the Dr. office I still couldn't stand but I could squat and literally "duck walked" into the clinic.  Dr. said that she thought I probably pulled a muscle and gave me a shot of some muscle relaxer and a shot of some kind of pain killer.  She also prescribed me muscle relaxers and pain killers and told me to take them as soon as I got home.  I spent the next 2 days either sleeping or stoned out of my gourd.  It took a couple more days before I could walk (actually shuffle) well enough to go back to work.  By this time I was only taking the pain killers at night since they affect me severely and I don't like feeling mentally retarded.  It took a good 6 weeks to get back to normal.  All this from pulling a muscle while brushing my f'ing teeth.  Fortunately I haven't had any problems (with that part of my back since) since.

I don't know all the medical details but my dad had problems with a disk or two in his lower back for years.  I know he talked to several doctors and they pretty much told him that surgery was, at best, a 50/50 solution.  50% chance that surgery could make it better and 50% that surgery could make it worse.  He chose to live with it (ie.  medication and exercise).

I hope it's not a disk.  Good luck.

My back has bothered me for years.  Just last summer I was stepping out of my truck and the second my foot hit the ground the rest of me followed.  I couldn't pick myself up from the back pain I was experiencing.  Hospital told me it was just a pulled muscle.  Pain killers and Naproxen and they sent me home.  Neither did shit for me.  I started seeing an athletic rehab/trainer and my back felt great during the visits but within 20 minutes of leaving I was right back to the same thing.  I decided to buy an inversion table.  The day I got it, I spent about 2 hours on it.  I actually passed out at one point.  The next day I woke up and my back felt better than it did for the last 7 years.  Now I might lay on it for 20 minutes a week when I feel achy.  Haven't had a pain since.

Sitting in the Neuro's surgical waiting room as I type this. Back pain blows, but the next hour will be even less fun for me. Get that shit squared away as soon as you can.

I have had the same problem with pain down the left leg. I ended  up with a sports chiro that practices Active Release Technique. Cured it. I see him once a month and am pain free...

I know a lot of people who've fucked up their back (myself included, twice including SI joint injury right now).  I've found that people who have surgery for back injuries from acute events which cause herniation or buldges of discs never really recover, but people who tough it out, go the the chiropractor and do decompression therapy along with back strengthening recover quite well.

My dad fucked up his back last year when he got out of bed and put his pants on.  Doc wanted to cut him open, I got him to go to the chiropractor and to use physical therapy to rehab it, and within 6 months he was back to normal.

Just about everyone at some point in their life will have a disc that isn't where it is supposed to be and most will be asymptomatic.   Most general practitioners don't have a clue about how to deal with back injuries.  They hand you pain pills, tell you to never lift with your back again, and if you aren't better in 6 weeks they will cut you open.

99% of all back injuries are spinal or facet joint in nature.  The spinal errectors are probably the least prone to injury, and it goes on to only validate my belief that most MD's do not understand how the back works.

It is amazing how it is the simple movements that can mess you up

sometimes it just takes time to let it heal

I have to agree

I have a messed up back and the MD's typically just drug you up more and more

My Chiropractor on the other hand fixed the issue so I don't need as much pain killers.
