I am finishing up a term paper, need to format the references in APA style.  This requires that each line, after the first in a citiation be indented .5" from the first line, but I have nofa king idea how to do this.  When I try to change the indention, it moves every line in the citation over.  Halp!

What version of word?

If you are 2010 you can just go to the "References" tab at the top and you can add sources and citations etc. It will auto generate the bibliography for you.

I think you can do this in 2007, but I'm not sure.

I am using 2007...I see the references tab...holy fuck, I guess that may have helped a bit..so, short of retyping the sources using the reference input tab, is there a way to fix what I've got?

ETA: nevermind, that reference builder does NOT give the sources in proper APA style..

Go to the ruler, there are two "wedges" for lack of a better term, that look like this:

\/
/

Select the text you want to format, then grab the bottom wedge and drag it to the .5" mark.

Done.

You may have to hold down one of the modifier keys to drag it separately, I can't remember off the top of my head.

ETA: WTF? the fucking editor keeps removing the \ on the second wedge.  The bottom wedge is a mirror image of the top one.

You have to hold down the shift key while you drag it, btw.

It is, however, it is incorrect, as it does not indent the lines properly in the references.

If you have a few more terms/semesters to go you should get EndNote or Zotero.  The citation programs are quite a bit easier to use when you're referencing journal articles that have a DOI.  For books it's still a lot of manual entry but you can something find a reference already done on the web and copy/paste that in.

EndNote is usually free from the software licensing department.  Zotero is free but the downside is you have to have firefox runnning to pull from your library.

I will definitely look into them!
