Why do text messages now require me to hit the message button each time to see the reply? Before, they would appear as received. Now, I have to push the messages button at the top of the screen when the reply comes before it adds it to the scroll?

Is there a setting change?

Under settings/notifications you can change the notification of a text message.

Okay, but I don't really understand what that does.

If you have selected "none" on the screen above, you will not receive any notification of a recieved text message. If you select "banner", you will receive a banner alert at the top of your screen that will go away after a few seconds. If you select "alerts", it will be like it always was for you.

I'll try a different setting and see which works. I selected off but don't remember which one it was set on. Banner I think.

I really like the banner notification.  The big blocks always seem to get in the way and interrupt me from something.

Off did not work.  It still refuses to add the reply back to the original screen.

If you want it to be like how it was I think you want to use the alerts not the banner one. Alert let's you choose to ignore the app or view the message. That sounds like what you are wanting.

I have no idea what you're asking.

TXT messages show up in the conversation view in the messages app regardless of the notification type.

By "in the message scroll" what do you mean?  The notifications/weather/stocks pull-down?

Mine are not showing up there.  A message bar pops up at the top, which says message1.  I must select that to read each reply.

Settings>Notifications>Messages

Make sure notification center is on.
Under alert style, select "Alerts" if you like it the way it was before iOS 5.
Badge App icon: On
Show preview: On
Repeat alert: Whatever your preference is
View in lock screen: On

If this doesn't work, I've got nothing.

You have the alert style set to banner.  Set it to alert.  Set the notification center option to ON for messages and they'll show up in the pull down notification thing as well.

This is what happens when you just blow thru the setup questions after upgrading to iOS5 without having a clue what you're telling it to do

Changed it to banner, still doing it. It was on alert.

Edit: Just changed it to none. It may be working normally now.

Edit: Worked once, now back to putting a 1 on the messages bar. Crap.

OP, your subsequent replies aren't showing up in the text message conversation? they show up as a notification which needs to be clicked to "refresh" the conversation window?

I understood what you're saying...

double click the home button and clear out all the apps in the background
then do a hard reset (lock button + home button until it goes black)
power on

see if that resolves your problem

if not, backup your phone and do a system restore

OMG you're holding it wrong, how many times do you have to be told.
