Neighbor asked me what this was.  I said it's a gun.

Just curious if anyone knows more info on this?

He says it has been passed down in his family from SC and that is all he knows.

Is it a rifle or a shotgun?

The last picture looks like a shotgun to me.

That's a Snider conversion on what looks to be a common Belgian shotgun.

With a Springfield Armory proof mark on the breech block.

Neat old gun.  I don't recall seeing one with brass components.

Good question.  I don't know.

Would this thing be worth anything or is it more of a family heirloom to pass down?

A better photo of the proof marks on the barrel will help tell the story about the origin and date the gun was made before conversion.

Can you show a photo of the chamber with the breech open?

Maybe a photo a little farther down the barrel, too.

Where would the proof marks be located?  Next time I visit I'll try to take more shots of the barrel.  Thanks

They're on the barrel near the breech, and on the receivers of Snider-Enfields.  You have some in one photo above, but the photo is too dark to read them.

I'm having second thoughts about the proof mark on the top of the breech block, I can't find a resource on line with Springfield's marks, and I don't have a printed reference that is complete.
