First up is the 3.6 L VVT, aka GM LY7. This is the powerplant on most of the GM suv's, ie. Buick, Caddy, what was Saturn. Application chart here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_High_Feature_engine

Is this a reliable motor? Any known issues? I'm wanting a Saturn VUE, ie. 2004-2007, with the Honda motor/tranny, for a few reasons (Gas mileage, parts commonality, reliability, etc). I'm wondering if I even want to consider and 08/09 with the GM motor/tranny.

Second is the 4.8 L Vortec, aka GM LR4. Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, Suburban, etc. Anything to be wary of?

Application would be on a 2wd second gen tahoe. Seems like this could be the optimal configuration for gas mileage, assuming no load, ie. cargo or trailer. Just worried it would be underpowered.

What has been ya'll's experience?

I did post this in cars and bikes, but I'm trying to get a vehicle this week, so I'm posting here too. Hope that's halal and all.

3.6 has many many problems....
4.8 is weak but solid with no issues

4.8 is a very economical performer with 302HP. We offer a psuedo base model crew cab 4X4 with that engine package and customers are reporting 25+ MPG (Imperial gallon).

The early 3.6's had some timing chain problems but have been redesigned and warranty took care of that fix. They are strong performers as well as fuel efficient.

Hope this helps.

ETA :

4.8's are not available in Suburban's, Tahoe's or Yukon's. Not here anyways.
Most have the 5.3, and the Denali line has the 6.0.

Thanks jdubya, I may do that one day while I'm not at work so I can be present to answer questions in a timely manner. Coming up 36 years in the automotive business, so I might have an answer or 2.

ETA,

Saturn is gone for a number of reasons, and are not a bad vehicle, but are no longer in line with some of the more modern innovations that have taken place.

I have the 4.2 in my envoy and it has been an absolute tank.  Tows my 30' camper (brakes arent up to the job though - so I only do it if I have too with trailer brake assist)

No motor probs but the GM window units suck and the blend actuators suck.  You think they could get shit right...

My son rallies around a 4.8 liter in a half ton pickup, runs it pretty hard with no problems.
He put a custom  ecm computer  in, and  spins the rpm up  repeatedly, sez it likes it just fine, and seems to get decent mileage.
