I had a wisdom tooth break two weeks back.  Decided I better have it yanked.  Pain increasingly got worse, went back to the dentist he said dry socket.  Now mind you, I am in my forties and have never had a tooth pulled so I did not know what to expect.

He had to scrape the jaw bone to make it bleed again.  That night, worst pain of my life.

Three days later, still hurting.  WTF this sucks.  Any suggestions?  Tips or hints?

Before someone asks, yes I smoke, but not very much and kept gauze over socket.

Do not drink through a straw, and call the Dr's office now for better pain medication. Pain is SO 1970ish

Hardly ever see patients with them who don't smoke.  Turns out bathing an open wound with toxins is a bad idea.

Did you rinse a lot?  For some reason, people - even some dentists - seem to think frequent rinsing is a necessity.  You get a dry socket if the blood clot is lost, but the blood clot is the "scaffolding" upon which healing occurs.  Best thing to do is leave an extraction socket alone.

As for what to do now - it's all about pain control.  Nothing else to do except wait it out.

I wonder why he didn't just pack some alveolar dressing or dry socket paste in it.  I have never "scraped the bone" to make it bleed again.  There are medications/dressings available specifically for dry socket.

This.  When I went back to get my socket plugged the pain was gone within a couple of hours.  OP is correct about the fun of preparing the socket for the plug.

I ended up with dry sockets in my lower 2 and my doc stuffed the holes with little gauze strips coated in a brown paste. The pain was terrible when he stuffed them in and the taste and smell were bad too. But let me tell you, in an hour I was feeling so much better. 2 days later I was fine. They replaced the packing 1 more time a couple days later and I was good to go.

I had my lower two wisdom teeth surgically removed yesterday. Lets hope for no dry socket. I'm gonna go take a percocet now.

Well, here's the rub...  When he extracted the tooth, it broke.  The top came off and he had to pull each root out.  I would call my situation a dry 1/2 socket.  If smoking caused this, why only on half the area?

I am quite interested in the medicated gauze.  I am tired of taking Vicodin.

I had gauze with clove oil on it.
I could not get the taste of clove out of my mouth.

I heard it's hell.  I had all four of mine done at the same time.  Once I got home, I spit all the gauze in the toilet and then slept for about 8 hours.  I woke up and my mom was cooking hamburger patties and fried potatoes.   I chowed down like there was no tomorrow and went back to sleep.  I got lucky.

The yellow bruising on both my cheeks was kind of special.

I had 2 at once, 1 on each side.  I had to pack with gauze soaked in clove oil.  Also NO smoking, or alcohol.

Yes.  I had all 4 wisdom teeth cut out at once.

Woke up with a mouth full o blood and decided to spit against Dr.'s orders.

Migraine and pain for 2 days.

It happened to me when I had my upper wisdom teeth pulled. I smoke and was trying to be very careful when drawing on a cigarette but I developed one in the left side of my jaw. My dentist did a relief cut in the hole where the tooth was and I was in pain for about two days. Total Suck!!

Same thing happened after I had my (single) wisdom tooth pulled.  Severe, constant throbbing.  The oral surgeon asked why I didn't let him know about the problem sooner, and all I could tell him was "I just figured this was why people avoided having teeth pulled, because it hurts."

Anyway, he packed the socket with some gauze soaked in something made from clove oil (eugenol?) –– immediate relief of pain.

I had all 4 of mine pulled at once and the lower two they do not stitch up and I got dry socket on my right side. Worst pain ever. I would wake up in the middle of the night and want to punch the other side of my face just to even out the throbbing. Hydrocodone (vicodin) gives me insomnia so not only was I in pain but I could hardly sleep. Lasted for about 8 days

I was dumb enough to smoke after my wisdoms came out too, but avoided that somehow.

Yes.  I had two impacted teeth taken out in my late 30's.  The surgeon said due to my age a dry socket was a definite possibility.

My dentist packed the socket with medicated gauze, but it didn't help much.  Exquisite pain for about a week.  You will live through it, although right now I imagine you wish someone would decapitate you.

Mine were straight pulls, but I found more relief from advil and tylenol together than I did from a couple vicodin tabs.

Either way, hope you're back to doritos and orange juice soon man.

My dentist has cool lasers for gum surgery. When he does an extraction, he waits until the socket fills with blood then clots the blood with the laser. There's no bleeding, a lot less pain, and the blood becomes the matrix for new bone growth. Dry socket just takes longer for this but the traditional ill effects are avoided.
