Hey, guys.

I'm scratching my head here.  I had someone who I consider more than an RKI say that he "read somewhere" that 5/8"-28 thread pitch on the muzzle will allow non-permanent attachment of a thread protector and still be ATF legal.

I've searched the ATF site, rec.guns, Dogpile, and Google, and am having difficulty verifying this.  My rifle is ready to ship, if this is the case.

If not, I don't want to get busted.  The FBI will be searching my home shortly for a security clearance.

Can anybody direct me to a pertinent article or memo?

Thanks!

They are going to search your house as part of your background investigation? When did this start? I've heard of them coming to the house in order to interview you, your neighbors, your family, but never to conduct a search. Is this something new or are you confused?

I was advised by someone who just had one done to expect my house to be searched.  I doubt that they will, but I want to be prepared.  I just want to make sure that everything is "kosher."

I could be wrong, kpel308, but it is my understanding that according to BATF, threads are threads - regardless of pitch.

Good luck.

Threads are not an evil feature. Ability to accept a flash hider or grenade launcher is.

JP enterprises routinely threads barrels in non std pitch.

i think i will make one of these flash hiders in my garage, just to make all those romainian ak74 owners into federal criminals.

Don't worry.  To save you the inconvenience of having to stand around, they take care of the search part while you're gone and do the interview later.  [:D]

Ex Post Facto...they might try to take someone in on that but they wouldn't make it past discovery in court.

we ak owners have been aware of this since mike prewitt's original inquiries to the atf technical branch, nearly 3 years ago.

c'mon over to the ak side if you have questions.
