Simple, do you hunt anything?

Do you eat what you kill or do you give it away?

I know this probably gets asked once or twice a year...

[#1]
It just got asked a couple hours ago actually.

I think it's been asked twice today.

Yes to all the above.
10/4/2011 12:06:05 PM EDT
[#3]
nope, and I don't have a problem with other people doing it.

I would hunt out of necessity, or if I had land with edible animals on it.  but it strikes me as kind of an odd thing to do for fun.

Just hogs and coyotes

Hogs and I keep most of the meat and give a few friends some, a M-1D Garand makes real short work of a group of  hogs.

[#9]
Needs an option for "No, just never got into it."

I hunt money....
10/4/2011 12:14:04 PM EDT
[#12]
no, not that I have anything against hunting, just its generally time consuming and expensive, and i don't have the money or time for another hobby.

Time consuming yes, is only as expensive as you want it to be though.  May need to plug a shotgun or get a 5 round rifle mag if needed but that's it if you already own guns.
10/4/2011 12:17:26 PM EDT
[#14]
Yes, I hunt.

Yes, I sometimes hunt what I don't eat.

I shoot racoons, opossums, coyotes, rats, snakes, etc.

Yes, I give away some of what I hunt.

I think that covers it.

I used to hunt quite often - now not so much.  Time, money, health and work all conspire to make it harder and harder to get out every year.  Nowadays I am lucky to get one quail/dove session in a year - the last elk hunt I went on was four years ago, and I suspect it was in fact my last until I retire.

I generally hunt with some friends and family and we all divvy up what we get, so I suppose I end up giving most of it away.  Which is fine.

ETA - Not strictly a hunt, but we do cull coyotes at my brother's ranch once a year, so I guess that counts as a hunt.  We dont eat those!

He lives in texas, he'd have to fork out money to hunt on a lease, unless he was lucky enough to find someone who will let him hunt for free.

I checked the top option on the poll, but others aply to me as well. Needs an option for exploding varmints and leaving them lay... I also donate alot of meat too...

The hunting leases are more of the expense i'm talking about.

Ah, yeah, we don't have that here. Plenty of National Forest and BLM land here, not the best for some stuff and lots of areas have been restricted or encase an open area so getting to it is impossible

I only really ever hunted deer and even then I haven't done that for a few years.  Permits are too expensive and processing (I field dress but that's it) adds $60 to the cost so it ends up being about $2/lb which for that I can buy hamburger.  Also, I hate morning and fun to me is not getting up at 4:30 AM and sitting in a stand while freezing my balls off just to shoot something.

If I had to to survive I would but I don't so I won't be doing it right now.

Deer (muleys only), elk, antelope, and the occasional small game (rabbit, mostly) just to keep the kids interested. And, hell yes I eat what I kill. That's kind of the point (although just getting out in the mountains is more of the point). If I can avoid it, I don't share the first two.  Antelope gets old quick, so I don't mind spreading that around a bit.

Nothing that requires a shotgun, tho. Shot a few grouse with a .22, but otherwise I avoid birds. Waterfowl and pheasant hunters seem kind of off their rockers to me, but as long as they don't make me eat the things, they don't really bother me much.

Yes. Can't wait for deer season to start (black powder) Yippee!  Taking my 15 year old for his first season.

I spear fish and rod/reel fish, that's hunting, no?

I eat what I kill and I like it that way.  I would hunt, but I don't.

Fix your poll.

I HAVE hunted before...didn't kill anything though

didnt bother getting a license this year, I'll go again next year.  Damn doves are taunting me  I had full intention of eating anything I killed

Outside of doves, everything else is either too much of an investment or too complicated.  Not too many places to hunt near me, I'd LOVE to find some private land the owners would let me loose on but don't know anybody yet.

[#24]
You left an option off your poll. I don't hunt, but not because it is "evil" or I don't agree with it. I have just never been. The only shotgun I have would need to be plugged and I don't have a large caliber rifle for deer.
10/4/2011 12:35:58 PM EDT
[#25]
I do hunt and eat meat animals that I kill.  Pest animals not so much (armadillos, for instance).

Texas is mostly private property.  I don't hunt either.  I have nothing against it; I understand why people like it; I'm glad people hunt; it's just not for me.

I freedive and spearfish regularly water conditions permitting.

I would say 80% of my diet comes from my catch.

Don't know if people here consider it hunting or not

10/4/2011 12:38:05 PM EDT
[#28]
Yes and most of it is tasty.
10/4/2011 12:38:42 PM EDT

I only kill animals that are a nuisance to me or my property.

I dove hunt occasionally a few times a year.

Moose, yes food for a good part of the year.

Bear or wolf that want to fuck with me, dead with no thoughts of harvesting.
10/4/2011 12:44:07 PM EDT
[#38]
I usually give some venison away to my neighbor,  Eat the turkeys all by myself but leave the prairie dogs for gods less fortunate critters.  (The ones without guns like Vultures & bugs)
10/4/2011 12:46:00 PM EDT
[#39]
If I could get a fucking elk tag I'd be a hunting fool. It's really the only game I care about.
10/4/2011 12:51:35 PM EDT

do we really need two do you hunt threads on page on posted with in 2 hrs of each other?
10/4/2011 12:52:22 PM EDT
[#41]
No, I just go camping with guns during hunting season.
10/4/2011 12:57:51 PM EDT
[#42]
If fishing counts, then yes I hunt and eat what I catch.  If fishing doesn't count, then no I don't hunt.  I takes away from my fishing time.

Love to hunt, and I do all my own processing.  From the field, to butchering, to summer sausage, etc.

Not as much as I should. Every year it gets harder with balancing the responsibilities of life and the amount of time the season runs.
