Need the hive wisdom here.
I have been asked to go to Romania next year to speak about alcoholism. Trip will last about three weeks. I can find it on a map and Dracula comes from there. That is all I know about it. Can anyone here fill me in on things I will need to know? |

My friends husband went with missionaries. Apparently practically the whole country lives on entitlements and nobody knows where the money comes from. There was more but that's all I can recall right now. The people they missioned to were really poor. I think there are a lot of orphaned children there. I think it would be pretty interesting. My friends husband came back in one piece. |
| There are quite a few Romanians in the U.K. Nothing specifically negative to watch out for, but the country itself is a very impoverished one in eastern Europe, so the downsides are what you might expect. I usually found them quite a pleasant people. At least the food should be good, if you enjoy that sort of cuisine. |

I went on a TDY to Constanta, Romania in '07. Man oh man, the women. Either smoking hot or butt ugly. The Eastern Bloc feel is everywhere. Constanta/Mamaia is a resort town on the Black Sea, but Bucharest is like going back to the Cold War. The Transylvaina region is cool. It is heavily influenced by German culture. If you make it up there find a place that serves chicken on the sword. The plum brandy served hot will tear you up quick. The city of Brasov has a sign on the mountain like the Hollywood sign. Bran Castle(Dracula's Castle) is located near Brasov. Beware of the gypsies. Our tour guide told us to not leave the bus in the event we broke down in gypsy country. You might have to pay to use the restroom. I did in Brasov. Strange. The RON is about $0.30, so that works out great. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_the_Parliament The Palace of the Parliment in Bucharest is the world's largest civilian administrative building. That thing was fucking massive. Apparently, it has a basement per Top Gear. |

Went there a couple of summers ago. A lot of the men struggle with alcoholism and thus don't do a real great job as fathers and husbands. The best of the best students leave to go to school and never come back.
They are still recovering from the fall of communism in their country. They don't understand the individualism, creativity, outside of the box western thinking. We've exported our affluence and not so much the mindset that leads to our affluence. Message me with any questions. I'll do my best to help. |

Top Gear Season 14 Episode 1 Also, yes, there are only 2 women types there, hot and young, old and ugly, there are no normal middle age women in Romania somehow. Dracula's castle is a letdown apparently. Don't trust gypsies. There are some areas that are unbelievable affluent, the rest of the country is absolutely impoverished. Really though, watch the Top Gear Episode, they show some really interesting bits of Romania.

My grandparents immigrated from Romania in 1922 and never looked back....if you meet people in Romania wearing shoes they work for the government....how do you make a Romanian chicken dinner? (first you have to steal a chicken, that is my Dad's joke)......Gypsies stole my uncle Nic for two months when he was a little boy......Luckily the police eventually
found him and returned him to my grandparents. |

We were scheduled to stay in Count Vlads castle on new years but it was way too cold way back in winter of 1999. We diverted to southern Croatia, just in time for the Serbs to go back to war I love eastern Europe, its a massive mix of culture and history going all the way back. |

She has some great videos discussing Islam. Careful about clicking on the ones about evolution or religion in general if you are a creationist (or have strong feelings about your faith).

We have a Romainan member that stops around sometimes.
Lots of Gypsies there but then again Romainians seem to hate them the most, just be on the lookout for retarded scams. If the subject is alcoholism you might want to stop by Poland first , the Poles I see here are usually drunk the Romainians not so much
