I'm thinking about changing my EDC knife from an old kershaw ken onion to some kind of automatic. How much should I spend on an auto to get a blade equivalent to the kershaw? The kershaw's been great but I thought an auto could be fun. Also what are the pro's and con's of traditional opening or out the front?

I would suspect you will be looking in the neighborhood of

100 to 140.00 for one with a good blade. I just got a Gerber

7157, with a 154 cm blade for 160.00. This seems like good steel. Most

of the benchmades use this steel. The knife I got is bigger than

what you are replacing. The smaller knives seem to be a little

cheaper than what i paid for mine.

Check out this page for some comparisons.

some good stuff there, thanks.  I guess they won't ship to me since I'm not LE, even though it's perfectly legal to carry them in AZ.

Why not carry a small fixed blade, instead? I've tried most of the name brands out there and I always end up going back to a folder clipped to my pocket, a RAT3 or Clinch Pick on my belt and a carbon fiber mini blade strapped to my skivvies.

There are plenty of other places to get them.
