So I'm in the mood to watch this classic and it got me wondering are those CAR15'S? Or just standard AR's?

They are FN FAL's.

Except for Pacino. He's shooting an assault rifle.

I wanna get a good surround sound stereo system, put the volume at the highest it'll go then watch the heist/shootout scene.

Heat, and Thief.

Two of the best performed mag changes in movie history.

Val= AR
James=1911

I wonder if they used the same firearms expert?

Caan went to Chuck Taylor for his pistol training for Thief, because Jeff Cooper wouldn't let him come to Gunsite. Caan was going to play a bad guy and Cooper didn't want to be associated with that.

Funny. Looks just like a Chuck Taylor text book mag change at the end. It's done in slow motion, but it makes it easier to see the perfection.
The shifting of the pistol in his hand has CT written all over it.

I heard that the Val Kilmar mag took some training as well.
