If ammo was "outlawed to manufacture or sell" or totally unavailable today and would be forever, how much ammo would you feel like you needed for your primary rifle.(5.56 of some kind)  And do you have that amount right now?

edit to define outlawed

well I wouldnt shoot for fun anymore.
Id want to shoot my rifle and pistol about once a year to make sure it still worked.

Would I want more ammo than I have? yes
Would I have enough? probably, unless I got in a gunfight or 2 at some point

Well I think it would depend on weather the ammo was out lawed or just unavailable. If ammo was outlawed - guns problably would be too, so you would not see too many people shooting openly. In that case you would not need alot.

If it was just unavailable - like the last 'Shortage' - but of a longer duration, I think handloading would become alot more popular if the components were available. Lead bullets at reduced velocities that could be cast at home also would be more popular.

In either situation, I think black market ammo would start arriving in the U.S. Look at England. Ammo is severely restricted there and the criminals get more and more Eastern European ammo. Americans would be worse as we are indepently minded and usually get what we want - look at prohibition.

Anyway, I got caught short by the last ammo scare and really did not have alot on hand. I decided that it was not going to happen again. Now I buy either some loaded ammo or some components each pay day. I think a few thousand rounds of each caliber you own is enough generally. For rimfires, Id stock at least 10,000 rounds as its a one time use.

I guess i meant "outlawed to manufacture and sell" in the civilian market. no components or anything.

my problem is I am poor..

I buy 400 or so at a pop... then shoot 100-200 the next weekend... I am never AHEAD..

I have 600 on hand right now of 556.. about 190 of 9mm.. and 50 rounds of 22lr..

this Sat I will be shooting 200 rounds to test my new build for function and such..

probably Sat night I will order another 400 and store that for the upcoming fall/winter.. and maybe GATHER in the winter..

I shot from Feb till now.. and I'm sure I've shot ALOT of $$ as I shoot every other weekend..

I'd like to have 1 can full going into winter.. about 1000 rounds would make me content..

shortage or not for sale would make using it STUPID unless needed for food/survival mode.. IMHO..

Depends on how many weapons and men in your company. Keep minimal 1000 rounds per weapon per man. The scenario of SHTF...then use sparingly. Make each shot count unless in an overrun situations..then bring the rain.....

If it included minimal practicing, and was expected to last ten years, I'd say

6k

Right now I like to keep a supply of 2k per caliber.
