I was walking the back of my lot recently with my brother in law, and we suddenly caught the the strong distinct smell of cucumbers by a pile of logs.  He said that it was a copperhead.  I've never heard of copperheads smelling like cucumbers before, so I googled it.  I found a even mix of sites that said it was true, and those that said it was an old wives' tale.  Anybody ever hear of such a thing?

I've been told that. Every time I've smelled something resembling cucumber outside, I've never seen a copperhead. On the other hand, every time I've seen a copperhead, I've never smelled cucumber...

It's an old wive's tale. Copperheads do not emit an odor that is any different than any other snake in N. America.

False. Not much more to say. Any credible source, such as a herpetoligist will tell you it is not true.

I didn't see a snake, but I didn't look real hard.   In fact, I've never seen a copperhead, although I'm in the northern part of their range.  The smell was unmistakable, but I know there were no cucumbers.  I kinda thought it was false, though, when I couldn't find a definitive answer.

Many snakes put off a foul odor when threatened.  That said I have killed a pile of Copper Heads and never smelled anything but blood and guts  I for the record do not harm snakes that do not put me or my animals in the hospital.

There is a certain bacterium that smells like cucumbers.  I can't recall it off the top of my head, but it's like geosmin.

I've worked with a quite a few copperheads and none of them smelled like cucumbers.

Broadbanded Copperheads do seem to have a pungent musk with a unique odor.

Timber rattlesnakes have a distinct odor.  I have smelled them before seeing them in the woods.  It may be that their skin absorbs the scent from their scent glands but the odor is something I have noticed on them for 25+ years.

I've never heard that copperheads smell like cucumbers.

I regularly see copperheads, diamondbacks, timber rattlers and water moccasins. The only snake that I've really noticed much of a smell from are some water moccasins.
