| I was walking the back of my lot recently with my brother in law, and we suddenly caught the the strong distinct smell of cucumbers by a pile of logs. He said that it was a copperhead. I've never heard of copperheads smelling like cucumbers before, so I googled it. I found a even mix of sites that said it was true, and those that said it was an old wives' tale. Anybody ever hear of such a thing? |

I've been told that. Every time I've smelled something resembling cucumber outside, I've never seen a copperhead. On the other hand, every time I've seen a copperhead, I've never smelled cucumber... I didn't see a snake, but I didn't look real hard. In fact, I've never seen a copperhead, although I'm in the northern part of their range. The smell was unmistakable, but I know there were no cucumbers. I kinda thought it was false, though, when I couldn't find a definitive answer. |

Timber rattlesnakes have a distinct odor. I have smelled them before seeing them in the woods. It may be that their skin absorbs the scent from their scent glands but the odor is something I have noticed on them for 25+ years.

I for the record do not harm snakes that do not put me or my animals in the hospital.
