I'm curious, what action is the driver supposed to take in a situation like that?  Assuming the vehicle hasn't been incapacitated, do they gun it forward (into a potential ambush) or throw it in reverse and try to head back where they came from?

The video makes it seem like they just gun it forward most of the time.

Probably not something that should be openly discussed.

Yeah, no good way to answer that. I'll say every one is different though, may be followed by SA and RPGs. Getting on the radio to check for injuries and vehicle status was key.

At 1:45, I've worked with the guy screaming "Go, go go go go" on some missions before.  He's a huge goober/nerd but a great guy.

Probably something that doesn't really matter

It's situation dependent and usually discussed in the convoy brief. When I'm in a softskin I am not un-assing the vic unless it's disabled. A convoy full of grunts and 3 land cruisers full of civies have entirely different reactions to the IED.

Common knowledge and can be found on multiple sites online. Not really new info. They (Afghans/Iraqis) know what "we" do more than most Soldiers.

Once they got the technology for victim activation they seemed to give up on the idea of using an IED as an ambush initiator. Especially true once cougars showed up in IZ. They trigger the kaboom, The MRAPs survive and disgorges a horde of pissed off Marines who proceed to wreck their shit. After awhile they stopped setting up kill zones and just went with RFB's  (random fucking bombs)

That's all they did '05-06 in/around Baghdad.  Remote triggered with pressure plate or reflector deals......very small percentage of command detonated.

Did convoy escorts (Kuwait/Iraq) there before the insurgency got bad.

Our truck drivers were TCNs.
They were hardworking (when we got over the boarder)
no armor
no weapons
pay sucked
lived out of their trucks
most were more than happy to show pictures of their families who they sent money to every month
Most had not seen them in years (worked in Kuwait before the war)

If it's what I'm thinking it is, didn't they stop doing that because the Taliban got wise?

Almost all of those I ID'ed the IED prior to detonation...old habits don't die. lol.

The most important guy in the truck is that one guy, "Hey guys, were good, every bodies fine, let's go."

I didn't mean to start a shit storm, just curious.

Thanks for y'all's answers.  Definitely makes sense to be situation dependent.  Based on the vid, it looks like no one was injured in those particular explosions.  Thank god.

Wrong

They do that on purpose to flip the up-armored vehicles, and it is lethal.

Just running over a brick or a sandbag in an MRAP can fuck your shit up if you arent belted down tight. Flipping over would be very bad.

This is a Video my father took on an embed as a reporter with 10th Mtn in Iraq.
In phone calls leading up to this video, he'd tell me that every time they went near a traffic circle or a police check point there was always some trouble.
Everyone lived, but the driver, a driver, and gunner were hurt pretty badly.  My father pulled the 3 guys from the hmmwv and administered first aid, most likely saving the life of the driver.
A guy from the truck behind them came to cover my father.
If you're in interested you can look him up on line Jim Wade is his name.
He's back in Astan now, reporting with Marine infantry units.  If you're in southern Florida, he reports for WMMB.
