+1 for Malwarebytes.  Good and free.

And once you get it cleaned up, download Microsoft Security Essentials for free. It'll probably save your ass next time.

as other have said you have an infection which has also modified your hosts file. After you get the infection taken care of download a fresh hosts file from bleepingcomputer and overwrite the infected one in your system folder.

Yeah right.  I got a system32 variation while running MSE that did the exact same thing the OP is talking about plus a few more tricks.

Microsoft Security Essentials, if you're not using it now's the time. This will get you fixed up without issue but you need to run the other standard free programs. AVG (free) anti virus and spybot. Use these thee and you'll never get computer herpes again.

If you're using Norton, kick self in balls and do the above

Same thing going on here.  About 1/3rd of the time I follow Google links, I get redirected to an ad site. Back, follow link again, get what I was looking for.  (using Firefox v6)

AVG, MBam, tdsskiller, Hitman Pro.. All find NOTHING.  I've been thinking about switching to MSE anyway, I guess I might as well give it a shot.

Well I tried the TDSSkiller, Malware, Ad-Aware, MSE and Avast.

Avast was the only one that found 2 files called "something" Redirector

I removed them but I'm paranoid to google search anything to see if it worked but I don't think it did.

I just used Avast last night to clean up my computer; same problem. I was running Spyware Doctor, which I paid for, and my computer was attacked and had more than 20 infections on it. I'm going to try and get a refund, since I just renewed my SD, and it didn't do shit to protect me. Avast fixed all of my problems for free.

Are you sure you simply aren't being redirected by Google to the first search result?  That's an annoying new Google "feature" that somehow several of my coworkers are seeing.  I guess Google thinks that not enough people are clicking on the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.z

Always a possibility, but seems unlikely. It's only on a specific for me. On my work PC I haven't noticed anything unusual.  At home, search redirects are the only affects I've noticed. My home page is fine, no weird looking processes running, Just a mild annoyance.

When I browse back, there's always a page in between my Google search and where I ended up.  For instance I could search "Frying Pans" click a link and see the page "Looking for 87 new ways to find frying pans?"  When I click back, there's a blank page that is obviously a redirector, but not always the same thing. Seems like the URL says "FreeWebDirect, or BetterSearchDirector" shit like that.  Click back once more and I end up back at Google where I can follow the link again to get the real page I was looking for.

I'm running off memory here, I'll replicate it tonight and get the exact URLs and search them to see if I get any clues. It's been happening for a week now, it's not exactly "0day", looks like if it were Malware it would have already been sniffed out and included in updates.

And MSE says I'm clean too.  But it looks like it has a smaller footprint than AVG, I'll probably keep it awhile.

It might not be your computer. Several ISP's have been caught redirecting search results recently.
