It's time for an Arfcom Alt-Country thread. I don't think there has been one yet, but I've seen some good songs posted in other threads.

What do you all listen to? I need to find some new bands.

No time to look up videos right now but look up Glossary:  "Gasoline Soaked Heart" and "Shout it From the Rooftops."

I am not a big country fan, but I do like Dwight's version of this song.

Check out some his other stuff too.  I like his Horse Soldier album a lot.  I've got his Hair in my Eyes, Horse Soldier, and Losin' Lately Gambler albums.  He's a pretty cool guy.

Edit:  If you like Truth Comes Out, go listen to This is my Prairie.

Not bad.

I think I've found out about more non-mainstream bands from Arfcom than any other single source.

Check out Split Lip Rayfield, kinda hard to explain what they are.  Thrash bluegrass or acid bluegrass is what I call it.

Old 97s! Great band.  Seen them a bunch of times in NYC.

"Time Bomb" - Old 97s (Live)

Some great bands came out of alt-county/"No Depression" movement in the 90s.  Uncle Tupelo would spawn Son Volt and Wilco.

"Punch Drunk" - Uncle Tupelo (Album: "Still Feel Gone," 1991)

FYI there are two free albums, Southern Independence, that you can download for free. Some of the songs posted here are on them. http://www.givememyxxx.com/  Ok, that URL looks shady. You can click to it from Shooter Jenning's page if you don't trust it.

I wish they'd hurry up and confirm my acct. so I can download those.

Have you listened to the Black Ribbons album? I liked it. I don't even know what kind of music it would classify as.

I better tag this because I saw Ryan Bingham and someone here turned me on to him.  I saw him in concert last year and he was awesome.

I don't listen to much Ray Wylie Hubbard, but I thought this need posted.

Probably the only song that refers to buying a "a couple'a cases of that steel core ammo with the berdan primers."  (around the 4:10 mark–– its a long song)

Choctaw Bingo was written by James McMurtry....i cant post from where I m at.
James McMurtry has tons of great stuff...His Dad wrote the Lonesome Dove series.
Charlie Robison
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Cory Morrow
Robert Earl Keen

I ll think of more....there is a ton of great alternative (closer to country as it should be)

Alejandro Ecovedo

Rank and File

Newer stuff like Cross Canadian Ragweed.

Probably better known as a songwriter for others, here's Lucinda Williams performing a cover of a Randy Weeks (Lonesome Strangers) song, "Can't Let Go" off her essential 1998 album, "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road."
