Well, I heard today is the day my boss is going to let people know if they are laid off or not.  I thought my job was relatively safe (IT at Penn State) but my boss said about two months ago that we have to let 3-5 out of 16 go in our department.  I just heard they let the entire mail room go just the other day.

Should be a fun day.

I have a friend who was grant-funded let go from Penn State a couple months ago. I hope this day turns out better than you fear. Good luck, and keep us posted.

My friend was fixed term in my department and his contract was not renewed last year.  It wasn't related to the budget cuts, though, just didn't need him.

I'm a Systems Administrator for the College of Agricultural Sciences.  We are one of the bigger colleges at Penn State because we have the Cooperative Extension network.  Cooperative Extension has an office in almost every county in PA to help connect Penn State to the people living in state.  We support the networks and servers and whatnot in each county.

Good luck to you.  I was laid off Aug 1 after working for 35 years and 6 with my previous company.

All you can do is burn their ass on unemployment until you find another job.

finding another job in Centre County PA is a huge issue, unless you like greeting at walmart.

I hear you.  I work at Iowa State Extension, our blood bath was a couple of years ago.  My center survived intact, but we have multilple funding sources.  Good luck.

Good luck! LIke doc_Zox said, finding a job in Centre County is tough. Finding an IT job in Central PA is tough period! They exist but the rates suck. That's why I'm currently commuting 150 miles daily...

If that's what I have to do then I'll do it.  I'm not going to be like my "friend" living on unemployment for the last year while not even trying to find a job.

Best of luck!  Been on both sides of the coin, having the ax fall and being one of the survivors, happy to make the cut, but knowing that the next one will come.  Its part of the IT industry

If you do make it, worth updating your resume just in case and start sending feelers out, even in a tough job market, time to sign up for something like linkedin.  Also if you get a chance to take vendor classes, take all that you can, one you meet contacts and second helps with keeping skills updated.

Just an update on my situation if anyone cares.

Notifications got postponed until today because of some paperwork error.  I dodged the bullet this time but there are going to be a few more rounds of layoffs in the upcoming months.  Doesn't look good.

Anyway you can step up and make yourself more valuable to the team so they look at you initiative as a good thing and layoff someone else next time?  It sounds like its eat or be eaten or march or die right now.

I wouldn`t wait for the ax to fall. Now is the time to make your escape plan. Whether it be starting a consulting business or getting a part time job some place, having an option is always a good thing. HTH
