I'm so out of the loop on this. I'm currently using Handbrake to encode  DVD's to mpg, but half of them come up as unviewable crap. I'm looking to encode DVD's I own so I can use my media server instead of digging for a DVD.

DVD43 + Handbrake.

Try some of the other profiles.  The MP4 high profile settings will work fine.

And it absolutely doesn't help to tell us what you're playing the files back on or with.  No help at all.

I'm using VLC on the PC, and TVersity on my PS3 and Xbox 360 for playback.

Might be worth the time to look on Doom9, have you tried .mkv's rather than .mpg's ?

Fuck that, use XBMC.

I use the "High Profile" setting on the right in HandBrake under Regular, then set the container to MKV and choose 'large file type'.  My DVDs play fine output to a 46" LCD TV.

I'll give XBMC a try. DVD43 is 32 bit only, and I have 64 bit Vista

Then U B fuct.  If you're already ripping, then you must already have something to crack the DVD encryption.  AnyDVD does this as well.

BTW, I use a Logitech DiNovo Mini for my HTPC, and it works GREAT with XBMC.

I have the same problem...I think. However, can someone translate all of that from Computer Guy to Evil?

I am currently using DVDFab8.  It works pretty well, it can copy and rip DVDs and Bluray.  It also has a bunch of presets you can use for ripping if you are a noob and just want to press a button to tell it to rip files that will work with Ipod, Zune, PSP, etc.  It also supports 3D media if you are wanting that.  It is a pretty easy program to use for novice users but if you want to get a little deeper into customizing your settings you also have that option.

I converted my DVD collection to avi files and run a media server.

DVDShrink then AutoGordianKnot to convert DVD to avi

The hardest part is to know what settings.

DVDShrink converted to 100% highest quality.
AutoGordianKnot highest video quality single file, 192kbs audio.

You will want to set up folders and run batches.  AGK can run overnight all by itself.

Anydvd from Slysoft.  Will rip anything including Blu-Ray.  It is worth the money.  I have never found anything it could not do.
Clone DVD and Clone DVD Mobile from Slysoft and will be able to do anything you want.

Convert them to .mkv if you want to are keep them in raw format and use VLC to play.

dvd shrink and dvd decrypter. both are free ware and stupid easy to use. you can take out subtitles, foreign languages, etc. i use it when i have a dvd to back up, which is less and less these days. dvd decrypter will remove the files from the DVD to your HD, then dvd shrink will convert them into an .ISO so you can either click to play on your computer or burn to disc. dvd decrypter will also burn to discs.

DVD Decrypter hasn't been updated since 2005 and it doesn't work on a lot of today's copy protected DVD's

Unless there is a newer version I haven't been able to find?
