So how do I get the phone (iphone 4, 4.3.5) to text a picture? Shouldn't there be a little icon next to the dialog box?

[#1]
Yes, or pic the picture in the album on your phone and mms it.

In the text mode there is a small camera symbol left of the text box.

In camera roll mode, if you tap on the pic,  the leftmost symbol is a box with an arrow...to email, mms (text), etc...

If your "Camera" icon is not there (bottom left corner) from a text, this means MMS is turned off. Go to settings, messages, and turn on MMS.

So not only do I not have the camera symbol, but there is no option to turn on mms in settings, messages.

It does not say MMS messaging - ON/OFF?

Under cellular data at settings there is a mms section but it wants APN (?) username, MMSC, MMS proxy and so on. Does this need to be set up?

I am missing that entire middle box with the mms on/off choice. I only have show preview, alert tone, and charachter count.

Is this ATT, or Verizon? Should be the same I imagine, but maybe Verizon is different. I have no such settings on my phone.

You sure you have the latest software? I remember on my 3G, not having it until I got the latest version of software. I can't remember which version it took though.

Go to settings, general, about and see which version you are running.

Look like this.

Looks to be on 4.3.5, which would make it AT&T and should be in Settings -> Messages as stated above.

I am on Tmobile with an Apple factory unlocked iPhone 4. Software is the absolute newest.

Don't think you can MMS on T-Mobile without jail breaking.

on a serious note, do you have a data plan?

Solution: get an Android device.

Unless of course you like buying a product that gets a new feature only when some guy in a turtleneck discovers some 'magical' thing that all the other phones have had for years.
