Does anybody know the types of missiles that were used in SAM sites both mobile and stationary in the Soviet Union, Iran, North Korea and Cuba throughout the early 1970's all the way up to the late 80's?

A shit load of different missile systems. Start with SA-2-google-ification, and follow the links.

SA-1 Guild · SA-2 Guideline · SA-3 Goa · SA-4 Ganef · SA-5 Gammon · SA-6 Gainful · SA-8 Gecko · SA-9 Gaskin · SA-10 Grumble · SA-11 Gadfly · SA-12 Gladiator/Giant · SA-13 Gopher · SA-15 Gauntlet · SA-17 Grizzly · SA-19 Grison · SA-20 Gargoyle

That's most through late 80's as far as I can figure, and not counting manpads and navy crap.

Judging by the entire list I quickly browsed, is it relatively accurate to say that this missile is the fastest and has the highest flight altitude out of all of them for that specific time period?

I can admire some Soviet Military equipment for it's very reasonable cost vs. effectiveness, but I was just watching this SA-2 video as a result of this thread, and it seems the SA-2 expends alot of energy zig zagging back and forth vs. making a bee line for the target.  I'm no expert, but I wonder if there is an actual good reason for the zigging and the zagging.
