[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Hoarders (Page 1 of 2)

Watching it now, and I don't feel sorry for these people...I actually get angry at them. I know it's some kind of mental illness, but they seem to be just stupid! People there, trying to help them keep their house and they just bitch and moan.

|
I've been in a house like that. I didn't feel sorry for them either, just more of a mild curiosity as to if they even knew what all the stuff was. A lot of it appeared to be buried beneath other stuff, so I would guess they had long forgotten what they owned. Probably mostly garbage. |

Quoted: I'd like to see the Arfcom episode with ammo forts, vet bring back MG42 and a 'Nam LAW rocket in the corner..... It would be cool, although in general the ammo forts I've seen posted have been very well organized. So it would be a show about large amounts of well organized arsenals. The people on the hoarders show never organize anything. It's piles and piles of old clothes and trash. |

Tonight's marathon was all about animals, but most hoarders on the show keep meticulous piles. Two words that don't go together unless you are a bit bent. But, they are very organized in their own minds according to their own methods. Just getting them to put things up out of those piles tends to cause WWIII. |

The guy with all the rats had a pretty bare house. Of course it's probably because the rats ate most everything that he left in there. |

Hoarders are assholes. What a totally insensitive, retarded fucking thing to say. My mom is a hoarder. I grew up in a house not as bad as they show on TV, but pretty full. She has a mental illness and until YOU try dealing with it, shut the fuck up. I feel bad for her nearly every day because, as the show illustrates, they are emotionally attached to all that stuff. If they will not take any medication, it will never get better. Just showing up with a truck will just put them through mental anguish, as the show proves. Makes for good TV but I would never put my mom through that. Counseling and meds are needed. It's been 12 years since I was in my old house and I'll bet it has just gotten worse. She will not let anyone help. Imagine never having a friend over growing up.... THAT, my friend, does NOT make her an asshole. She has an illness and needs help, but in our free country you can't just have someone committed for keeping stuff like the fridge with a bad compressor that went out in 1978 and "just needs a new compressor". It still sits in the house and the good one out in the garage... ETA spelling |

Most of them are in fact assholes. It doesn't matter if they are mentally ill or not, they are still assholes who choose to do assholish things to family.Look at the people on that show. Pretty much every single one of them is a fucking asshole to their family. They cause children to live in garbage and eat rotten expired food and get angry if you tell them that is wrong. They cause their spouses to lose their fucking minds and run away because they can't take the abuse and garbage anymore. They alienate and humiliate and insult their children for not embracing the trash. I'm not just pulling this asshole stuff out of my rear end because of my own family. I'm saying it because I can look at hoarders behavior and see how they treat people and can correctly identify them as assholes. |

My mom cried uncontrollably when I tried to remove the old fridge from her house. Same with some random box of paper. Punch in the face? Yeah, she may have physically tried to stop me. They act like that because that stuff is personal to them, like us children are to them or their pets. They do not have the mental capacity to see the utter worthlessness of that stuff. Do you believe in the temporary insanity defense? Do you believe people can be insane? This, in my opinion, qualifies. It might even be another strain of insanity where a person holds a job, acts normal, is a nice person, has friends and has their respect, is a good member of society, pays her bills, and hoards. More later. I would like to continue this discussion rationally. I had forgotten your tie to this and apologize for the reply. I would never see her as an asshole. She needs help that science has not cared to delve into deep enough yet.... |

Maybe they'll make someone clean again. lol I never took pics. My house was worse. Little paths between stacks and stacks of papers and boxes. Carpet worn through to the wood subfloor. Every flat surface piled with stuff. Kitchen counter, coffee table, kitchen table, sofa, TV top, and so on. Garage was just as bad. A bedroom was entirely filled from floor to nearly eye level. The living room was piled nearly to eye level. There was just 4 tiny spots for then"family" to sit and a path to see the TV through. My dad drank a lot to let it go. Tough childhood. |
My buddy is a house appraiser in South Florida. One time he was going to appraise this house and as he pulled up he spotted the owner waiting on him impatiently by the door with a tub of vasaline he asked her what that was for and she told him to rub some underneath his nose. My buddy opened the door and he wish he had taken the owners offer of the vasaline because the smell was so horrendous it was like he was punched in the face with a giant fist of shit and piss. It made him retch and dry heave. He pulled his shirt over his nose and barreled in through the door only to be greeted by wall to wall, waist high, trash piles and small trails through said trash that went from room to room to the door. He said there were 6 or so cats who acted feral who would use various trash piles as ramps in order to jump on and latch onto him in which he used his clipboard in order to swat the cats away. He made it to the kitchen which was a wreck which had a one of those mechanical litter boxes that had been filled with so much cat shit that the bag inside had broken the lid off and the machine was covered in poop. He noticed that the litter was moving . He made his way back through the living room and as he was writing he noticed a giant Florida cockroach had landed on his clipboard, that's when he dropped his clipboard and bolted out of there like there was no tomorrow. He got home and stripped off his work clothes and had his girlfriend hose him down with the water hose. Its a real shame there is not more help for people like this. Its like they get so used to having stuff around that it consumes them.

Quoted: Does saving every brass casing I can pick up count? I don't even reload 9mm, 7.62x25, or .45 ACP and I still pick it up, tumble it, and store it in plastic bins. Depends. If you eventually reload or recycle it, then no. If you're sitting on piles of brass in your front room, then you may have a problem. |

Some hoarders are quite meticulous about their stuff; I was in one lady's house where she had so many boxes there was only a narrow passage to go through to get to the rooms. But she knew where everything was, and all the boxes were labeled. ![]() |

Those with multiple cats................yes, your house stinks like ammonia and cat shit 99% of the time. I thank that last 1% for actually cleaning out the poop boxes and vacuuming. I LOVE having to work the rest of the day stinking like your house. I hate cat lady hoarders with a passion usually reserved for ax murderers.

There's a lady who lives in my neighborhood whom I've never quite found out where her house is but I believe shes a cat lady hoarder, she and her husband are always driving around picking up peoples trash in the back of their truck and shes completely covered in cat shit. They like to frequent a local gas station and one time my mom was in there getting her paper and coffee when they walked in, I was in the car, when my mom came out quickly and white as a sheet. She told me she was standing there taking a gulp of her coffee when the woman walked past her and at the same time caught a wiff of her. She just sat the coffee and paper down and walked the fuck out, she told me the coffee started to taste like shit smells. |

my mother is a hoarded as well. Her house does not look that bad but that is because she has multiple locations outside the house that she keeps things such as the garage (can hardly fit a lawn mower in there). She also keeps things in a shed we have, the neighbors garage, and a store room that she rents. Inside the house she has the entire basement, and three other rooms that are piled practically to the ceiling with crap. She has also started to pack my childhood things up and slowly fill my old room, my brothers room is already full.
She has mental issues that she wont address, she wont even admit that she has mental problems. I too had the problem of never being able to have friends over. I also was forced to take two week s off work to clean up her shit for my graduation party. imagine how embarrassing it is to have to call your boss and tell her you cant work because your mom wont let you. Anyway, hoarding is mental problem for people. Despite the fact that my mom is an ass hole, it does not make them all ass holes, they are struggling mentally and a lot deny they have a problem and are too ashamed or whatever it is to ask for help. It is sad though. |

I am a cable guy, I live that show five days a week, six when we are really busy. The trouble with the show, is that it has no way to express the importance of the scent of the homes. When people hoard that way, insects are attracted, and insects add an entirely new dimension to the mess.
Of course you know you are at a nasty house before you knock on the door, as you approach the porch the scent greets you, there is a certain smell that is created when a house is infested with roaches, once you smell it once, you never mistake it for anything else. Of course some are weirder than others. I once went into a house that wasn't exactly nasty, but was bizarre. The older woman who lived there hoarded lawn mowers and newspaper. She had stacks of newspapers about three foot high in every possible part of her house, the only spots that weren't covered with newspapers were covered with lawn mowers, there were at least twenty inside the house, most of them looked either brand new, or almost new, none were beat up, rusty or otherwise obviously nonfunctional. I have a mild allergy to ink used on newsprint, so I was not having a good time in that house, but the odd part is that with all of the mowers I didn't smell a hint of gasoline or oil anywhere, and other than the newsprint smell, nothing else either. |

The way these people live is absolutely DISGUSTING.. they should be committed. That's the Progressive Spirit! Quoted:
Every single one of those people have some serious mental issues. Ya think? Most of their mental issues were triggered or exaggerated by a loss in the family, usually a mother or father. |

In the end, I have found hoarders in general have the same mentality. Hoarders in Hungary and Europe are no different than in the states if I am seeing things as it is.
They had a special on hoarders in Hungary and it was typically the same exact thing. Nothing surprising. |

Quoted: Quoted: watching hoarders makes me insanely productive in cleaning my house me too.. guess I need to fire up netflix and watch an episode! (just one) Same here. Sometimes I crack a beer and watch an episode in preparation for a serious house cleaning. My house is pretty clean and sparse but it's still awesome motivation. |
