Mesh tape the joints (it's self adhesive)
Coat with 15 minute mud
Let dry
Sand till smooth
Buy can of orange peel from home depot...spray patch
Paint

If you have to ask you are going to end up with a crap job, but the right way to do that is to mud lightly, cover with paper tape, then let dry, then mud with feathering, then sand lightly, then final coat and sand very lightly to blend.

If you use fiberglass mesh tape you will have to feather two feet in every direction to get it to look <half way> decent.  That sucks––both in time/effort, and even in the final result.

Work compound into the joints.
Remove excess with your taping knife.  

Apply tape and mud over.

Let dry.

Apply second coat of mud feathering out the mud from the joint.  

Sand smooth.

 Yup beekeeper is right i only use mesh tape on new work on the tapered edges.  Use paper tape itll save you some headaches.

You need to remove the repair and put in some support around the outside edges.
Some plywood @ 3" wide will be fine.
If you just mud and tape over that repair,and someone hits the wall just right,you will
be starting all over.
